Liam Payne baffles fans with strange accent as he talks Will Smith Oscars punch

One Direction star Liam Payne has left fans rather perplexed after he seemed to have a different accent at the Oscars ceremony.

Appearing on the red carpet, the 28-year-old, who is originally from Wolverhampton, was interviewed by ITV journalist Noel Phillips and was asked his take on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards.

But as Liam spoke candidly about his opinions on the situation, fans noticed a distinct difference with his accent.

Sharing his thoughts on the conflict, the musician said: "Will Smith actually used to live behind my house, I have the pleasure of knowing his son and daughter very well. We did Men In Black 3 with him.

"I believe whatever he felt he did, he had the right to do.

"I also felt there were three losers and one fight."

But once the short news clip hit social media, fans couldn't help but share their thoughts on Twitter regarding the star's transformed pronunciation.

One person tweeted: "This is the oddest thing I’ve ever seen," followed by a laughing face emoji.

Another confused commented: "Who is it? Not that One Direction guy?"

A third wrote: "Is he now Welsh? What is going on…"

While a fourth added: "What the heck. Did Noel Google his birthplace after?"

Expressing his thoughts further on the impromptu slap, Liam said it "cut him really deep" and he had to "leave his chair" as a result.

Talking about Will's Oscar win for the film King Richard, the singer said he would rather remember the beauty from the actor's acceptance speech rather than the slap itself.

He added: "To sit and watch one of the best emoters that we've seen speak from the heart and I'd rather take the beauty out of the situation than the pain.

"But I had to leave my chair I'd be honest with you, it cut me really deep.

"And I don't get deep about these things but I'm a big movie fan, I'd be honest with you."

During the star-studded Oscar ceremony, Hancock actor Will smacked comedian Chris and told him to "keep my wife's name out your f**king mouth" after the comic joked about Jada Pinkett Smith's "G.I. Jane" haircut.
