Since the books took off over 20 years, the Harry Potter franchise has expanded into all sorts of areas. From merchandising and movies to Hogwarts being built at Universal Studios theme parks. But even with the millions more to be made, JK Rowling does say no to some ideas even when they come from stars like Michael Jackson.

Speaking in an unearthed interview, Oprah pointed out how so much has been “Potterized” over the last couple of decades.

Rowling replied: “I can only say to you, it could be so much worse. Michael Jackson wanted to do the musical. I’ve said no to a lot of things.”

Asked if she has creative control over everything, the Harry Potter author replied: “No, I have a say.”

As for what helps her decide what ideas to back, Rowling admitted it’s only when she knows whatever it is will be done well.
