Nadia Sawalha believes she was heading for early death before having daughter

TV presenter Nadia Sawalha thinks her partygoing lifestyle meant she was "heading for an early death" before everything changed when she welcomed her eldest daughter Maddy with husband Mark Adderley.

Speaking candidly on the couple's How To Stay Married (So Far) podcast, Nadia, 57, admitted she and Mark, 51, weren't thinking about becoming parents when she found out she was pregnant.

"We were a beautiful disaster, we were two quite broken people when I think about it,” she reflected.

"'We were both drinking very heavily, we were both crazy."

"When you think about how much we used to drink, we used to think it was funny to lie in the road and see if we would get run over!"

Nadia – who is a mum to Maddy and Kiki with Mark – also said: "I was 38 years old and I had lived my life exactly as I wanted to all my life. I lived out of a suitcase for years, I was always on the move, I would party hard, I smoked like a maniac.

"I was heading to an early death, I really was.”

The presenter then shared that her life completely changed when she discovered that she was going to have Maddy, 19.

The couple had only been together just under four months at this point.

Nadia confessed that she wasn't thinking about having children and said she was planning a "different life".

It wasn't something she had immediately set her sights on, but it all changed once she found out she was having her eldest daughter, Maddy."Maddy saved my life,” she said. “Because I was just looking at this baby and saying, ‘Right, who am I going to be?’”

"That was literally my turning point in my life."

Nadia and Mark also share daughter Kiki, 14.

The pair married on June 6, 2002 and have faced hardships in their marriage, but ultimately worked through it, with Nadia previously stating how they got through it during a heartfelt post for their anniversary.

She said: "We have actually worked our arses off to keep this relationship alive and fizzing. Couples counselling, staying when we've wanted to leave, listening when we've not wanted to, compromising when we'd rather have died."

She ended the post by saying: "I love Mark more than I ever have. Our marriage in some ways is a beautiful disaster and I wouldn't have had it any other way."
