Malik recently gave a rare interview to Sirius XM where he discussed his music and former bandmates. The star doesn’t give many interviews and has shied away from talking about One Direction in the past. This followed him leaving the band in the beginning of 2015, citing “stress” as a reason to go back to his normal life. Later that year, the band split up.

After 1D came to an end, each of the band members started releasing solo music.

Zayn maintained strong relationships with the rest of the band, but has never publicly commented on any of their solo work – until now.

He said on the radio show: “I’ll tell you what, Niall is my favourite.

“How about that? There you go. Niall makes the best music, there you go.”

Zayn went on to add: “Yeah I will say that he makes better music than me. Yeah, I’m a Niall fan.”

Niall is one of the more successful members of the band. His second album, Heartbreak Weather, was released in 2020 just before the pandemic hit.

The album debuted at number 1 on the UK and Irish Album Charts and also claimed number 4 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart.

Despite Niall’s solo success, rumours have surfaced in the past year that One Direction are planning a reunion in 2021.

Ladbrokes’ latest odds on the band getting back together this year currently sit at an incredible 1/4.

However Zayn’s odds on returning to the band previously sat at a weak 8/11.

Following his positive comments about Niall, Ladbrokes have slashed the singer’s odds on appearing in the supposed 1D reunion.

At the moment, Zayn has fantastic 1/2 odds on joining the rest of the band if and when they finally get back in the studio.

Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati said: “1D fans will be delighted Zayn is even talking about his old bandmates, but news that his odds have been slashed to take part in the reunion will be even more music to their ears.”

However, this week Harry Styles received a Grammy Award for Pop Solo Performance, making him the first member of the band to be recognised by the organisation.

After finding such success with his solo work, Harry may be a little reluctant to jump back into the band.

Meanwhile, Zayn recently hit out at the Grammys for their “favouritism”.

Zayn wrote on his Twitter account: “F**k the grammys and everyone associated. Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary.” (sic)

Speaking about this with Sirius XM, Zayn said: “It’s nothing to do with my own personal gain, because if they even nominated me at this stage I wouldn’t accept the award, because it doesn’t mean anything to me.

“The entire organisation doesn’t represent anything and I don’t believe they showcase the best talent in the industry.”
