Queens most iconic looks – sparkly gowns, huge crowns, dazzling colours

With her legacy of era-defining looks, Queen Elizabeth II was indisputably a style icon.

Her Majesty served as the embodiment of service and duty to one’s country for 70 years until her death on Thursday (September 8).

The monarch also inspired, surprised and delighted fans with her royal style, which has evolved right alongside the many phases of her storied reign.

As the Royal Family and world mourn the loss of the UK's longest reigning monarch, Daily Star take a look back on some of Her Majesty's most memorable outfits from her vivid fascinators to shift dresses and her colourful coat and matching hat combinations.

Princess in purple

70 years ago, the then Princess Elizabeth was enjoying a series of Polo Matches, Picnics and Dances on a long 11-week visit to the warm Mediterranean Island of Malta, where the Duke of Edinburgh was stationed as a naval officer.

The royal made quite an appearance on the island wearing a stunning purple A-line gown.

The dress featured slightly lower cut neckline on the corset, more suitable for her age at the time.

She accompanied the gown with a white furry stole and matching bag.

Of course, what royal outfit would be complete without some crown jewels, of which Elizabeth wore an elaborate necklace and a crown from the royal collection.

Newly-crowned Monarch

When the 27-year-old newly crowned monarch sailed into Sydney harbour on 3 February 1954, she practically stopped the nation.

Her arrival attracted an estimated 1 million onlookers and our new Queen mesmerized onlookers with this dazzling gown.

The white floral gown mimicked a wedding dress, sporting an A-line skirt with a one-shouldered design at the top.

Not to be outdone by other guests, Queen Elizabeth’s dress featured hundreds of embroidered flowers with a lace tool that trailed behind her.

Her trusty clutch bag completed the look alongside a white fur stole and a series of diamonds, including the royal crown, a necklace and an extravagant pair of drop earrings.

A slick of red lipstick and a beaming smile made the stunning ensemble pop.

Mother of the Groom

The Queen didn’t need to wear white to stand out from the royal balcony on the day her son Prince Charles famously wed his late ex-wife, Princess Diana.

For the highly anticipated nuptials, the Queen looked absolutely radiant in a light blue dress and coordinating hat.

The dress features three-quarter length sleeves which she teamed with her trademark pearl necklace and brooch.

Perfectly poised as ever, her Tiffany blue dress was a statement piece that marked her place as a fashion icon but didn’t distract from the bride, allowing Diana to shine on her big day

Pretty in pink

The Queen’s penchant for vibrant colours and striking prints has long been synonymous with her unrivalled sense of style.

The monarch rocked this Barbie-pink ballgown in Hungary in 2004 where she was attending a banquet with Prince Phillip.

Despite the eye-popping pink, The Queen has become known for accessories and didn’t disappoint, sporting a pair of classic white gloves, a stylish black and white clutch and her trusty jewels.

Prince Phillip was the perfect accessory wearing a classic black tuxedo and a matching smile.

Stealing the Show

The queen cemented her place as a fashion icon in November 2006, when she waltzed into the House of Lords for the State Opening of Parliament in a sparkly white body-skimming column gown, a fur stole, and a tiara.

The dress stood out to many as the Queen rarely wears dresses that skims her body, and favours gowns with an A-line skirt.

The look was labelled as classic, with the Queen’s natural elegance and beauty shining alongside the bedazzled frock.

The Queen later delivered a famous speech, the final one for Prime Minister Tony Blair, which was dominated by plans to introduce legislation to combat terrorism and crime.

Wedding look

Perhaps one of the Queen’s more popular style choices, she is seen here wearing one of her trademarks bright coloured dresses with a matching coat.

Queen Elizabeth chose yet another cheery hue at the nuptials of her younger grandson, Prince Harry, to Meghan Markle wearing a lime green head-to-toe Stewart Parvin look.

She added a few contrasting pops of colour in the form of a purple plume on her Angela Kelly hat and her stark white gloves.

According to colour consultant June McLeod, who spoke to Good Housekeeping at the time of the affair, the shade was a respectful one.

“Green is the colour of growth and rebirth,” she told the outlet. “A person who wears green is the regulator and open-hearted. Green is a highly significant colour worn as a sign of respect and intention for the future.”
