Rosé Is Making History on the Billboard Charts

To say Rosé of Blackpink is faring well as a solo artist is an understatement. The singer is already breaking records with her single “On the Ground,” which was released less than two weeks ago.

The song debuted at number one on the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. (excluding data from the United States) charts. According to Billboard, Rosé is now the first artist to top the latter list both as a solo artist and with a group (Blackpink’s “Lovesick Girls” was number one on the list in October).

The track also debuted at number 70 on Billboard’s famous Hot 100 chart, marking “the highest-charting release for a female K-pop soloist in history,” according to Entertainment Weekly. Overall, she comes second to Psy, whose “Gangnam Style” peaked at number two in 2012.

The numbers are pretty staggering: “On the Ground” accumulated about 92.1 million global streams and 29,000 sales in its first week. Rosé’s second single, “Gone”—which joins “On the Ground” on her two-track release, R—garnered 19.6 million streams and 25,000 downloads worldwide, earning the 29th spot on the Global 200.

The 24-year-old New Zealand–born artist clearly has plenty to celebrate, including a stellar first performance of “On the Ground” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The TV debut was a full-on pop production with big choreography and sleek set design, all filmed in black and white.

Rosé isn’t the first member of Blackpink to share music outside of the group. In 2018, Jennie had her turn with the track “Solo.”
