Simon Thomas' wife Derrina has given birth eight weeks early after falling ill with preeclampsia.

The former Sky Sports and Blue Peter presenter has taken to social media to reveal that the couple welcomed a baby girl into the world on Tuesday (October 4).

Taking to his Instagram page, the proud dad shared a series of black and white snaps from the hospital.

He penned: "Not everything in life goes quite according to plan.

"One moment we think we’ve got eight weeks until our little one arrives; the next, after Derrina fell rapidly ill, we’re suddenly welcoming into the world a very tiny, but hugely precious baby girl weighing just over three pounds.

"The #neonatal team at #stokemandeville hospital were simply incredible and held our hands physically and in spirit the whole way through a very fear filled and stressful day yesterday.

"I cannot express how proud and blessed I feel right now – I have a beautiful, brave wife in @derrina , a precious son and now a tiny, wonderful daughter and sister for our boy Ethan.

"We have a long road ahead of being in hospital for the next few weeks; but we have the best team around us.

"Thank you Stoke Mandeville and thank you #nhs for being there for us and thank you God for blessing us as a family so much."

The TV star has been inundated with messages from friends and fans.

One fan penned: ""Sending you all strength, love and happiness. Congratulations to you all x"

Another added: "Congratulations to you all. How wonderful a little baby girl. My son was born at 29 weeks and is 3 and half now and thriving. All the best for your neonatal journey."

A third person posted: "Welcome the world, wee girl! Glad you are all being well looked after. I spent the first 3 months of life in the NICU, so sending solidarity to you all! Love and prayers."

While BBC star Matt Baker said: "Sending lots of love to you all X"

The TV star revealed last month that he was to become a dad again, a year after he married Derrina.

Simon's happy news comes five years after the death of Simon's late partner Gemma Thomas.

She tragically died in November 2017, just three days after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, leaving her husband and son behind.

The mum-of-one passed away when she was 40 years old just three days after she was diagnosed with blood cancer after a visit to the GP.
