Snoop Doggs tear-jerking relationship with his late Christian minister mum

Over the weekend Snoop Dogg announced his mother, Beverly Tate, had passed away in a series of heart-warming tributes on Instagram.

The rapper, known for his huge list of albums, TV appearances and cannabis advocacy does, it seems, have a softer side.

The two apparently shared a very close relationship, with Tate appearing to provide wisdom to the hip-hop star on a variety of occasions.

Beverly Tate was ordained as a minister in 2005, with it understood that Snoop was brought up in a firmly Christian home. It was while he was growing up that his mother, thinking her son reminded her of a particular cartoon dog, began calling him Snoopy.

The mother of three was a single parent, with Snoop's Vietnam war veteran father absent for much of his upbringing.

Middle-child Snoop spent his childhood in Long Beach, California with Beverly and her new husband. Despite getting in trouble in on a number of occasions, including spending six months in jail and being associated with the gang Crips ("joining a gang ain't bad, it's cool, it's fine," he told the Guardian in 2011), he seemingly never lost touch with his own family values.

Videos of Snoop, now a father of four himself, surprising his mother have cropped up all over the internet—in one particular he takes her round some shopping to which her response is that she, "loved (him) more than enough", to which he can be heard saying “I love you more today than I did yesterday".

That's why the Snoop's public tributes to his "angel for a mother" come as little surprise.

One post said: "Thank u god for giving me an angel… for a mother… TWMA."

In another he wrote: "U taught me how to read and write how to struggle and fight and all l the facts of life… now you finally got ya wings mama… Godspeed"

Beverly's role in Snoop's Gayle King apology

Following the death of Snoop's friend, the international basketball star Kobe Bryant who was tragically killed in a helicopter crash along with his daughter and seven others, he lashed out at TV personality Gayle King.

When King raised questions about Bryant's 2004 rape case in the time shortly after his death, Snoop lashed out her. But, apparently it wasn't until a he apparently spoke with Beverly that he gained a better perspective on the situation, with her encouraging him to retract his comments.

In an apology video on Instagram he said: “Two wrongs don’t make no right. When you’re wrong, you go to fix it. So with that being said, Gayle King, I publicly apologize to you by coming at you in a derogatory manner based on emotions, me being angry at questions that you asked.

“I overreacted. Should have handled it way different than that. I was raised way better than that."

Speaking to show Red Table Talk Snoop said: "My mother raised me in church and raised me to respect women.

"There were certain things she said to me that took me back to being a little kid. When your mama can make you feel like a kid, that's when you got to get right. I didn't feel grown, I didn't feel like Snoop Dogd the rapper, I felt like Snoopy."

Snoop shared a screen shot of texts his mother sent him after the interview that said: "Keep sending the word out to someone who needs to hear a kind word or see a big smile"
