Twenty One Pilots appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform their song “The Outside.” Led by frontman Tyler Joseph, the rock band pulled back on their usual wall of sound vibe for a more hypnotic, mid-tempo performance of the tune.

“I’m already bored/ I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this one before,” Joseph croons on the song. “I’ve got a long drive, I’ll tape my eyes/ So I don’t fall asleep again.”

“The Outside” comes off the band’s 2021 album Scaled and Icy. The release, the band’s sixth full-length LP, dropped last May and marked the follow-up to their 2018 album The Trench. “The Outside,” written and produced by Joseph, was the fourth single off the album.

Scaled and Icy was created largely while the two band members, Joseph and Josh Dun, were in Covid-19 lockdown in their respective homes. The two collaborated on the album virtually, with Joseph writing and producing in his home and Dun recording and engineering his drum takes from across the country.

In 2020, Twenty One Pilots shared the standalone single “Level of Concern.”
