X Factor Australia star charged over the murder of 9-month-old baby girl

A former X Factor contestant has been charged with the murder of a nine-month-old baby following a lengthy police investigation.

Mitchell Callaway, 37, was pictured being escorted out of his home in Boraville, New South Wales on Thursday (June 8).

It comes after emergency services were called to reports of an unresponsive baby girl at around 10am on July 23, 2018.

They rushed the child from the home in Binnaway to Coonabarabran Hospital.

However, she was sadly pronounced dead shortly after.

It has been reported that detectives from Orana Mid-Western Police District were examining the incident under Strike Force King.

Cops received new information which allowed them to issue a search warrant at a home in Binnaway on May 31.

Further investigation led to his arrest and he was subsequently charged at 9.45am today.

Callaway has been refused bail and appeared briefly in Macksville Local Court on one count of murder.

The 37-year-old is set to appear before Coffs Harbour local court next week.

The singer was featured on season 3 of the show as part of the Over 25s category.

He was mentored by Natalie Bassingthwaighte during his time on X Factor in 2011.

Callaway finished 7th place after he lost a sing-off to Johnny Ruffo.

He sang Keith Urban's song Tonight I Wanna Cry for his audition.
