Creepy deepfake AI tech makes dead relatives ‘wink and blow kisses’ in photos

A deepfake tool that lets you bring your dead relatives "back to life" has unveiled a whole host of new animations.

In a press release on April 4, MyHeritage – which transforms photos of dead people into moving footage – announced the arrival of Deep Nostalgia™ only for paid subscribers.

The 10 new "special" animations mean you can plaster a weird array of emotions on your dead relatives' faces, including one named "compassion" and another called "thankful".

Other options are "kiss and wink", "approval", and two separate kinds of dances.

The tech company has previously admitted that, while not everyone will enjoy deepfake technology, many of its users find the tool "magical" and it helps them feel closer to lost loved ones.

In its FAQs it said: "This feature is intended for nostalgic use, that is, to bring beloved ancestors back to life.

"Some people love the Deep Nostalgia feature and consider it magical, while others find it creepy and dislike it.

"The results can be controversial, and it's hard to stay indifferent to this technology."

When the company announced its new animations on Twitter, the reaction was mixed.

One person commented: "I like, wink and blow a kiss."

"I will make 5 ancestors wink if we can get 6-month subs," said a second user.

Meanwhile, others confessed the idea made them uncomfortable and even found the idea of animating dead people distasteful.

"Please… don't disrespect the dead. That's plain stupid," tweeted one.

"This is creepy!" said another user.

"Let the dead be dead," blasted another.

More than 26 million animations have been made using Deep Nostalgia since its launch and many users said they found the experience emotionally rewarding.
