Gimp suit creep offered cigarette by lads he tried scaring off in dead of night

A pair of lads turned the tables on the notorious Somerset Gimp after he tried to intimidate them as they walked home from the pub.

Chefs Alex Warren, 19, and Charlie Bond, 20, were approached by the man in Cleeve, North Somerset, at around half past Midnight on Tuesday October 25 after a night out to celebrate Charlie's birthday.

The pair videoed the Gimp, who was wearing latex gloves and covered in what appeared to be animal poo.

As the Gimp approached them he started writhing around on the floor and muttering in some unintelligible language.

Alex said it was a “clear attempt” to intimidate the pair – who are both from the North Somerset village.

But, he added, it “backfired spectacularly” when the creepy character realised they were not scared of him.

“The guy’s a legend around here and has been doing it for years,” he said.

“We were literally out on the green (in Cleeve) for about 10 minutes before we saw this drunk guy stumbling down and he started interacting with us.

“It was quite obvious who he was, the guy's a local legend and is known all about.

“He had latex gloves and was covered in an earthy liquid like he'd been rolling around in fields or dunking in septic tanks. He was quite pungent with this earthy sort of smell.

“When I stood there it was quite terrifying to start with. He’s just a man but it takes a moment to process it when you are trying to discern whether to fight, flight or freeze.”

Alex said that when the “adrenaline kicked in” the gimp quickly realised that they were not scared of him.

“He was definitely trying to intimidate us and quite clearly create some psychological distress.

“After a minute or two he realised that we are two lads, a few beers down.

“My mate is 6ft9ins and is a force to be reckoned with. Once he’d realised that the initial shock had turned into humour he got up and took the cigarette.

“I tried to talk to him – human to human – about what is going on and then he gets off.

“He takes the cigarette off the bench and starts walking away.

“You can quite clearly hear him saying ‘oh I’ll try’ after we told him to get home safely.

“It was high pitched and quite different from writhing around on the floor speaking some demon language.”

Alex doesn’t want to demonise the man and he believes that had he had the right help “this could have been avoided”.

He said that after the man fled, he rang the police who arrived within a few minutes.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary said that a man in his 30s had been arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and has been released on bail.

Similar sightings of a person wearing a "gimp suit" – a full, dark bodysuit and face covering – have previously been reported in the nearby villages of Claverham and Yatton in 2019, 2021 and 2022.
