Benidorm holidays could cost more next year due to new tourist tax

BRITS could have to fork out more for a holiday in Benidorm if a new tourist tax is introduced.

The Valencian government wants to introduce the tax which would see tourists pay a fee for each night they stay.

The rate has not yet been decided, but suggestions of between 50 cents and €2 per night (42p-£1.68).

The fee would depend on the type of accommodation guests stay in, with hotels more expensive and hostels and campsites cheaper.

For a two-week holiday in Benidorm, that could cost a family of four an additional £94.

The Spanish tourism sector is already suffering heavily because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of Brits have cancelled holidays due to travel restrictions, causing hotel workers to fear the industry will collapse, and to beg for a travel corridor.

Alicante's tourism councillor, Mari Carmen Sanchez, has hit back at the tourist tax proposals, and said the city will not have a tourist tax.

As reported in English-speaking Spanish news outlet The Olive Press, she said: "It seems that in the situation in which we are in with the pandemic hitting citizens again, especially in the tourism sector, they decide to approve the tourist tax.

"It is a burden for the sector that leaves us at a clear competitive disadvantage compared to other similar destinations across the country."

A decision on the tourist tax will be made in March 2022, and could be enforced in 2023.

It will be up to individual municipalities in Valencia if they want to charge a fee for overnight stays.

Tourist taxes are already in place across the Balearic Islands and in Catalonia.
