EasyJet changes their hand luggage rules – here is what you need to know to avoid being hit by huge fines

EASYJET has announced new changes to their hand luggage rules.

The airline announced earlier this month that their Hands Free option has been replaced by a new option that lets passengers pay to take a suitcase into the cabin.

Earlier this year, easyJet scrapped their free hand luggage, which previously let all standard passengers take a suitcase onboard, with no weight restrictions.

However, the new rules no longer allowed this with easyJet passengers being forced to pay for a Flexi Fare to take hand luggage for free.

With Flexi Fares starting from £17.49 each way, passengers would often have to pay nearly double their ticket to take a suitcase onboard.

The airline has introduced a new option, which allows standard ticket holders to pay to take their luggage into the cabin.

Therefore both Flexi Fares and Standard Fares can take a suitcase as hand luggage with them, although the latter will have to pay for it.

While this means passengers can save money, others have said this may not be as much of a bargain as it seems.

The Points Guy explains that while Flexi Fares are more expensive than a standard fare plus luggage, the Flexi Fares also come with seat allocation and speedy boarding.

The cost of easyJet's hand luggage can also be more expensive than other airlines – Ryanair charges just £6 to take a suitcase into the cabin, while easyJet's starts from £5.99, it goes up to £32.99.

Not only that, but easyJet passengers have to book through the app to get the option to pay for a hand-luggage suitcase.

Other low-cost airlines such as Vueling don't charge to take a suitcase onboard.

EasyJet explain on their website: "If you’d also like to bring a large cabin bag on board (max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including any handles or wheels), you have the option to:

  • select an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat or
  • NEW: book a large cabin bag for your flight on our app

"If you’re an easyJet Plus cardholder or customer who has booked a FLEXI fare, you can also bring a large cabin bag on board (in addition to your small cabin bag) as part of your membership or fare benefits. See below for full details."

Any bags which are bigger than this will be put in the hold, with passengers charged £24 if they are caught with an oversized bag at the gate.
