Filthy cruise ships failing RECORD number of cleaning inspections – and it's making people ill

CRUISE ships are a dream holiday for some – but they'll quickly turn into a nightmare if you get sick.

That's more likely than you might think, as a new report has revealed that a record number of ships are failing health inspections.

The ships regularly go through rigorous testing – but 2017 was the worst year to date for failed inspections.

A report by US body the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed that 15 ships out of 250 failed crucial health checks.

This is a steep rise on 2016 when just four ships failed checks and amounts to six per cent of cruise ships.

One Ferries Del Caribe’s boat, the Kydon, failed its inspection twice.

Only 41 ships got perfect scores.

The body’s public health inspections check a range of items on board each ship.

These include the cleanliness of each ship’s water, the preparation of food, pest control, the health and hygiene of employees, and the measures to stop disease breaking out on board.

Ships failed tests for several reasons, such as crew members working with contagious bugs like gastroenteritis.

Four of Carnival Cruise Lines’ ships failed checked – their liners sail to destinations like the Bahamas, the Caribbean and Mexico.

A statement from Carnival Cruise Lines says: "We remain absolutely confident that our shipboard operations are of the highest quality.

"We traditionally have had an exemplary USPH record fleet wide.

"Regarding the recent grades, we take immediate corrective action, not only for the items reported, but also in providing widespread and intensive training and continuing education to all levels of our team members across the fleet.

"Our shore side and shipboard teams are fully engaged and focused on ensuring that our operations are held to the highest standards and that our teams deliver an exceptional experience to our guests.

"Upon re-inspection, both Carnival Triumph and Carnival Vista received passing grades.
