Flight delays today LIVE: EasyJet cancels 60 more flights & TUI ruins Brits' holidays as airport travel chaos continues | The Sun

EASYJET have cancelled more flights today, creating more chaos at airports as travel disruption continues to anger Brits across the UK.

Ten thousand passengers who had booked to fly on EasyJet today, from and within the UK have had their flights cancelled.

According to The Independent, at least 60 flights have been grounded today, most of them to and from London Gatwick.

Britain’s biggest budget airline is unable to crew the schedule it has planned from the Sussex airport, and is cancelling around 30 flights daily at a few days’ notice.

Another airline cancelling flights was TUI – with several flights cancelled. The airline plans to cancel around 200 flights throughout June.

Meanwhile, airline lobbyist Willie Walsh has criticised transport secretary Grant Shapps for having blamed the aviation industry for hundreds of cancelled flights.

The director-general of the International Air Transport Association said Mr Shapps has been “absolutely useless in his approach to the coronavirus crisis”.

At a conference in Paris on Tuesday he also said: “Since the beginning of the pandemic, as minister of transport, he’s done nothing for the industry.”

Family in 'disbelief' after flights are cancelled twice

Flights up and down the country have been cancelled for weeks now with hundreds of families affected by the chaos.

One family, from Beccles, Suffolk, were supposed to fly to Larnaca in Cyprus with friends, but had their flights cancelled twice by Wizz Air.

Speaking to the BBC, Rachel Hunt said their first flight was cancelled after they arrived at Gatwick Airport, having left their home at 02:00 GMT on Wednesday, 1 June.

"To get all the way to the airport and just sit there and get a text message at 08:30 to say your flight has just been cancelled, we were like 'right, now what do we do?'," she said.

"There was no-one from the airline there… we felt completely on our own."

She managed to get another flight booked two days later. That time, they also booked a hotel close to Gatwick.

"We got all the way to the boarding gate only to get another message just as we were about to board the flight," she said.

"I was just in disbelief, I thought once is unlucky, but twice is just ridiculous. I was in tears."

Travel disruption continue at Bristol Airport

There has been further disruption for Bristol Airport passengers with flights subject to delays and cancellation – as at least seventeen flights into and out of the airport were cancelled today.

The flights cancelled on Wednesday led to passengers being left stranded in destinations including Milan, Lisbon, Dubrovnik and Copenhagen.

Outgoing flights to Belfast, Edinburgh and Nice were among those that did not take off.

Searches for ‘cancel my flight’ explodes

Analysis of Google search data reveals that searches for ‘cancel my flight’ exploded 163% in the United Kingdom as of the week between 22nd May 2022 and 4th June 2022 – the highest level in a year.

The analysis, by travel experts at OurWovenJourney reveals that searches for ‘cancel my flight’ exploded to double the average volume within the past week, an unprecedented increase in Brits looking to cancel their travel plans, according to Google search data analysis.

A spokesperson from OurWovenJourney, commented on the findings: “With over 200 flights being cancelled in the last week due to staffing issues in airports up and down the country, it is fascinating to see the scale at which British holidaymakers are making the decision to cancel their own flights and not risk hour long queues and general travel disruption.

"These findings highlight the enormous impact that airlines are having on their customers with searches for 'cancel my flight' higher during this period than when travel restrictions as a result of lockdown were in effect.”

'Cancelled summer trips could cost families over £1 b'

The Prime Minister today described the rail strike action as "reckless and wanton" in the Commons.

At Prime Minister's Questions, Labour MP Afzal Khan said: "Two weeks ago the Prime Minister told the House: 'To the best of my knowledge everybody is getting their passport within four to six weeks', however the Passport Office is currently quoting a 10-week service time, with many of my constituents waiting well over that period.

"Cancelled summer trips could cost families over £1 billion. Does the Prime Minister accept that the Passport Office backlog is placing additional pressure on families already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis?"

Boris Johnson replied: "Actually what we are doing is 91% are getting their passport within six weeks I can tell him. We are putting hundreds more staff into the Passport Office.

"The strength of demand by the way is a sign of the robustness of the economy because everyone is frankly wanting to go on holiday and quite right too.

"But when it comes to travel chaos, have we heard any condemnation yet from the opposition for the RMT and their reckless and wanton strike?"
