Green list update next week but Brits set to be disappointed despite hopes for Spain and Greece

THE next green list announcement is expected next week – but Brits should be ready for disappointment when it comes to their favourite holiday hotspots.

Due to be announced ahead of the next update on June 28, government insiders have said it will be a "cautious" update.

Holidaymakers were left disappointed earlier this month, when no new countries were added to the list.

Portugal, one of the only holiday destinations on the green list, was also removed, meaning just 11 countries remain on the quarantine-free list although most of them are not welcoming Brits.

A government source told the Guardian: "My sense is that we’ll continue to be very cautious in thinking about how we take any steps that could increase transmission."

The UK's Freedom Day has also been delayed until at least mid-July, after Boris Johnson pushed back the lifting of all restrictions in the UK to July 19.

This is following the rise in cases of the Delta variant which is more transmissible – the UK reported 11,007 new cases on Thursday, the highest since February.

The travel industry is calling for the UK to open up foreign holidays by July 1, in time for the summer holiday season.

The boss of Jet2 has said Malta, along with some of the Spanish and Greek islands, should be the first to open to Brits due to low Covid rates or high vaccine rollouts.

However, there is hope that fully-vaccinated Brits could avoid amber-list travel restrictions from next month.

Earlier this week, Treasury minister Jesse Norman confirmed the government is looking at ways of allowing fully vaccinated people to go abroad again this year.

However, this is unlikely to be until late July or early August, according to The Times, due to the new measures and vaccine passport proposals needing to be ironed out before enforced.

More than 100 countries could be included in the list for double-jabbed Brits.

However it is also worth noting that the government proposal for fully-vaccinated Brits to travel quarantine-free isn’t a reciprocal agreement, and Brits should check the entry restrictions before travelling.

France is currently only letting in fully-vaccinated Brits, while Germany and the Netherlands have banned UK arrivals due to the Delta variant.

Spain is one of the few countries with no entry restrictions for Brits, while destinations such as Portugal and Greece require a negative Covid test on arrival.
