Heavy traffic warning for the great Easter getaway next weekend as 15 million car journeys are expected each day

  • AA warn of heavy traffic over Easter with 15million car journeys expected a day

Families preparing for an Easter getaway next weekend have been warned of heavy traffic – with a mammoth 15million car journeys expected a day.

The congestion is set to peak next Saturday, according to AA, in which Brits across the nation reunite with family and friends over the long weekend.

The roads will be further impacted by British Airways’ forced cancellation of more than 300 flights to and from Heathrow due to strikes by airport security staff. The airline is axing up to 32 flights a day between today and Sunday 9 April – which is around five per cent of its schedule.

With wet weather predicted, the car insurance provider is advising drivers to slow down on motorways because of the conditions.

Easter Sunday is set to see around 14 per cent of Brits visit friends and family, with a quarter of 18-24-year-olds most likely to travel for this reason.

This is closely followed by 22 per cent of drivers aged 25-34.

Easter Monday is predicted to be the quietest single day, but could still see around 12.5million cars on the roads.

Drivers, especially those using country roads, are advised to be on the lookout for vulnerable road users as poor weather often hinders visibility.

Nick Powell, AA Patrol of the Year, said: ‘With the Easter weekend being the first opportunity of the year for some real family time, it’s important to prepare your car for the journey before heading off.

‘A few simple checks could stop car trouble from interrupting your plans so it’s well worth taking ten minutes to check your oil, coolant and windscreen wash levels.

‘Ensure you have plenty of fuel or EV charge in case of long delays and check all the lights are working. Finally, before hitting the road, check the tyre pressures and tread depth – but not forgetting the spare if you have one.’
