Holiday test rules explained: Full list of Covid tests needed if vaccinated and unvaccinated

THE government has announced new changes for Brits going on holiday in a major shake-up to the Covid travel restrictions.

One big change is the Covid tests needed from Brits when returning to the UK.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced that the traffic light system has been scrapped with just a red travel-ban list – meaning amber and green countries no longer exist.

Also changing is the tests required from vaccinated and unvaccinated Brits -with double-jabbed travellers able to save hundreds per family.

Here is everything you need to know about the new rules, in place from next month.

What tests do I need to return to the UK if I am vaccinated?

From October 4, Brits who have had both jabs no longer need a pre-arrival test before entering the UK.

However, you will still need a test on day 2 of being back in the UK.

The new rules will allow this to be a lateral flow test, not a PCR test – a much cheaper option – although this won't be introduced until the end of October.

How much do lateral flow tests cost for vaccinated tourists?

From the end of next month, you will only need a lateral flow test on day two, although you will have to pay for this as the NHS tests are not accepted.

Here are some of the Covid test providers and airlines offering the lateral flow tests, many of which offer next day delivery:

  • TUI – £20
  • British Airways – £21.25 with code BATRAVEL15
  • EasyJet – £23 with code ejh2021
  • Jet2 – £25
  • C19 Testing – £29
  • ExpressTest – £35

What tests do I need to return to the UK if I am unvaccinated?

From the end of October, vaccinated Brits will face much stricter rules with more Covid tests.

Anyone returning to the UK who hasn't had both jabs will have to quarantine for 10 days, as well as have a pre-arrival test, and a test on day two and day eight.

How much do the tests cost for unvaccinated tourists?

Unvaxxed holidaymakers will need three tests – a pre-arrival test, and one on day two and day eight of their return.

Here are some of the Covid testing kits which include all three tests needed:

  • TUI – £50 (includes all three tests)
  • British Airways – £21.25 (pre-arrival) £86 (day two and day eight)
  • Ryanair – £129 (includes all three tests)
  • EasyJet – £32 (pre-arrival), £43 (day two), £43 (day eight)
  • Boots – £139 (day two and day eight)
  • C19 Testing – £29 (pre-arrival), £169 (day two and day eight)
  • Qured – £25 (pre-arrival), £138 (day two and day eight)

Which countries do I need Covid tests to enter?

Many countries are welcoming Brits if they have been fully vaccinated without needing a Covid test, although unjabbed Brits will need one, or have to quarantine on arrival.

Here are the entry rules for some of the most popular holiday hotspots:

Spain

  • If vaccinated, proof of vaccination
  • If unvaccinated, negative Covid test

France

  • If vaccinated, proof of vaccination
  • If unvaccinated, banned from entering

Portugal

  • If vaccinated, proof of vaccination
  • If unvaccinated, negative Covid test

Greece

  • If vaccinated, proof of vaccination
  • If unvaccinated, negative Covid test

Italy

  • If vaccinated, proof of vaccination and negative Covid test
  • If unvaccinated, negative Covid test and 5-day isolation on arrival
