Holiday warning for families heading abroad this week – with threat of severe delays | The Sun

THE UK government has warned holidaymakers who are either heading abroad, or returning from holidays, that they could face delays this week.

Strikes have already caused some problems for passengers this year and that looks set to continue this week, with more walkouts potentially delaying travellers.

On Tuesday, the foreign office updated its travel advice for people heading to and from France this week, saying that coordinated strike action could affect transport networks on Thursday, April 13.

The government warns that action could even start the night before, and could go on for "several days".

The advice states: "The Easter holiday period is expected to see high levels of cross-Channel traffic on all routes.

"There might be delays for passengers, especially those on coaches, travelling between UK and French ports.

"Trade unions have announced demonstrations and coordinated strike action on Thursday 13 April, affecting multiple sectors including transport networks.

"Industrial action may start the evening before the strike day and run for several days."

The foreign office has also warned that protests linked to the strikes may also cause problems for tourists visiting Paris, among other places.

They say that this could lead to both violence and further delays.

Their advice continues: "Since mid-March there have been spontaneous protests in central Paris and elsewhere in France.

"Protests are likely to take place around Friday 14 April and could occur with little notice.

"Some protests have turned violent. The protests may lead to disruptions to road travel."

The UK government recommends that people "monitor the media and "check the latest advice with operators before travelling".

They also suggest people "avoid demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities".

Eurostar has said that its routes would not be affected by the strikes, but told TTG: "Public transport and train connections may continue to be disrupted."

The warnings follow protests in France last week where flights were grounded and cross-Channel trains cancelled in protests against President Emmanuel Macron raising the retirement age.

Protesters stopped traffic around a mile from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport early last Thursday morning, meaning travellers were forced to walk.

A Paris Airports spokesman said: "Terminal 1 is blocked by activists, as well as road access to other areas."

Airlines were also forced to cancel flights to, from and over France as air-traffic controllers joined the industrial action.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has warned that the threat of ATC walkouts could cause problems all summer.

Last month he said: "Air traffic control [ATC] strikes are going to be infinitely worse.

"There are capacity restrictions on European ATC systems because of the military activity over Ukraine… and all of the Asian traffic is being funnelled down across German and southern eastern European airspace.

"So, air traffic control is going to be materially worse."
