Man pays for him and his friend to sit in first class but paid for his wife to sit in economy – but people are divided | The Sun

A WOMAN has sparked controversy online by revealing that her husband paid for him and his friend to sit in first class on a flight, but only paid for her to sit in economy.

The man and his friend would often go away together to watch sporting events, meaning that he and his wife rarely had the chance to go on holidays.

However, this time he offered to bring her along for the journey, only for it to end in tears.

When the woman found out she would be sitting in economy while her husband and his friend enjoyed the luxuries of first class, she refused to go on the trip.

She then told her story on Reddit, to ask for advice and to see if others felt she had acted unreasonably.

She wrote: "My husband and I haven't been on a trip (out of coutry) for years. while he goes every year with his best friend. His reasons for going with him is because they both go to attend sporting events.

Man slams single mum for jumping the airport queues – but people are divided

"This year, my husband told me I could go with him and his friend since they were visiting a new destination. He paid for my ticket and everything else since I'm a stay at home mum and have no job. the kids were left with my mum.

"However, when I found out that he had booked 1st class for himself and his friend while I got economy. I just couldn't hold my tongue.

"I confronted him about it and he at first refused to discuss, then when the argument got heated he yelled "I PAID FOR YOUR TICKET, ISN'T THAT ENOUGH???" then kept on about how I should stop acting like I was "royalty" and that if I come to think about it, even economy is fine for me since I "technically" don't work anyway.

"I cried because of what he said but decided to just not go altogether. He changed his tone and started begging me to just go with what he planned but I declined.

Why you should never wear flip-flops to the airport

"I went to pick the kids from my mum's house and he came back 3 hours later huffing and puffing about what happened.

"His friend sent me a text calling me entitled, and said this was the reason why he didn't want my husband to take me with them and I just proved his point.

"I did not respond but I blocked him since he's gotten increasingly rude over the past few months.

"He (my husband) said I keep crying about being excluded and this is what happens when he finally decides to include me."

The vast majority of people responded in favour of the woman, saying she deserved to be treated better.

One user wrote: "If you’re a stay at home mum, then all the money he earns is SHARED FUNDS. There is no “him” paying, in fact you paid for his first class ticket as much as he paid for your economy ticket.

"The level of disrespect is astounding."

Another questioned the relationship her husband has with his friend, saying it sounded like they were more than just friends.

They said: "Why does he want to have alone trips every year with his friend, and why would he seat his own wife in a totally different class than himself? So she can’t be around them?

"I almost have a feeling he would make her stay in her own room too while he shared one with his 'friend'."

A third suggested she had dodged a bullet by not going on the trip, as they believed it sounded like she would have had a bad time.

They said: "It's pretty clear that you just dodged what was going to be a miserable trip for you. The friend didn't want you there and husband grudgingly got you a ticket in steerage.

"Had he also purchased you tickets for the sporting events too, or did he expect you to amuse yourself in a strange city without spending money?

"The only way he can make amends for this is to take you away for a first class holiday each year too. If he can afford first class with his best friend, aren't you worth it? This man doesn't value you highly enough."

However, the man did receive some support in the comments too.

One person suggested that the woman was intruding on some valuable bonding time with one of his friends and accused her of throwing a tantrum.

They said: "Clearly this is something special to him and his friend and he wanted to include you.

"Maybe he messed up and that could be a conversation but you also ruined his trip, his friends trip and some bonding time with a friend.

"If he works hard, is a good father and a good husband he can have a little time to himself. You should be able to talk to him that you feel excluded not being first class but in many ways this is special for him and he is including you.

"Not saying he didn't mess up and not saying you shouldn't talk about it but you are throwing a bit of a tantrum and ruining his trip that means a lot for him because your lack of communication."

Others suggested reasons why he could have innocently booked her in economy class after putting him and his friend in first.

One said: "Are these trips for business or personal trips? If this is a work trip this entire conversation has a different meaning.

"As someone who travels for work, I get the seat my company pays for. And usually, overseas is first class, but there are exceptions. Maybe her seat was bought after 1st class was booked."

A second added: "There's also the possibility that they booked those two tickets then later booked the wife's when first class was full."
