Portugal holiday prices plummet after being added to amber list – with August deals as low as £180

HOLIDAYS to Portugal have plummeted in price after the country was added to the UK's amber list.

Families wanting a holiday to the country during the school holidays can find seven-night deals as cheap as £180.

Portugal was one of the few holiday destinations initially on the UK's green list, which saw thousands of Brits flock to the country.

However, it was removed last week due to fears of the Delta variant, meaning anyone returning must now quarantine at home for 10 days.

Since it's removal, departures from the UK to Portugal for July and August fell by 64 per cent, according to TravelSupermarket.

Emma Coulthurst from TravelSupermarket said: "It would, in normal times, be fairly hard to find a seven-night package holiday during the summer school holidays from under £300pp.

"You can understand why it has got to the point where foreign holidays from the UK during this period are available from under £200pp.

“Prices are often the most expensive at the start of the school holidays as people are itching to get away as soon as they can.

"This year, they are some of the cheapest due to the current confusion and chaos over how the traffic light system is implemented."

Despite this, the government currently advise against going on holiday to amber list destinations.

While travel is not banned to countries on the list – unlike the red list – both Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock said not to travel to them.

The Prime Minister warned: "It is not somewhere you should be going on holiday, let me be very clear about that."

Families also face being left out of pocket, or having travel insurance invalidated, if travel plans change at the last minute when going on holiday to an amber destination.

Former PM Theresa May also slammed the UK’s “incomprehensible” holiday ban insisting the country is "shut for business" despite the successful vaccine, adding: "I really don’t understand the stance the Government is taking."

And up to 16 million people said they would be going on holiday to an amber list destination this year.

Ms Coulthurst also gave advice on families wanting to book a holiday to a destination currently on the amber list, including getting flexible booking guarantees, as well as booking using a credit card for extra protection.

PC Agency's Paul Charles warned that holidays to Europe may not return without quarantine until August.

Not only that, but staycation demand has led to sold out holidays in the UK and soaring prices – some triple the cost than a week in Spain.

However, we've rounded up the best seaside holiday park deals from just £119pp.
