Spain holiday warning as Covid rules to remain for another six MONTHS – and it could affect summer next year too

BRITISH tourists visiting Spain will have to use a Covid-19 travel certificate for at least the next six months.

It's possible that if case numbers don't go down quickly enough that officials will extend the rule for a full year.

The European Parliament has agreed to keep the EU Digital COVID Certificate system in place until June 2023.

The regulation was set to expire on June 30, 2022.

There will, however, be a mid-term review and the system could be lifted if coronavirus cases have gone down enough.

The decision has been taken just as millions of British tourists are set to jet out for the busy summer season, especially in Spain.

Members of the European Parliament agreed that the rate of coronavirus was still too high for the travel certificate to be lifted.

An EU spokesperson confirmed: "To ensure that EU citizens can benefit from their right to free movement regardless of the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, the EP plenary has endorsed the Civil Liberties Committee’s decision to open negotiations with the member states to prolong the EU Digital COVID Certificate (EUDCC) scheme – set to expire on 30 June – for another 12 months."

Along with extending the validity of the EUDCC scheme until June 30, 2023, the changes also enable member states to grant test certificates based on new types of tests.

MEPs amended the proposals to stress that member states should avoid additional restrictions to the freedom of movement for EUDCC holders, unless absolutely necessary.

To gain entry into Croatia, British tourists must have a passport with at least three months validity remaining after the date you plan to leave the country.
