The 10 top holiday destinations for Brits in 2022

‘Freedom day’ – and quarantine-free travel abroad – are still a little way off, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t planning trips for when things reopen.

Bookings for 2022 breaks are on the rise, and there’s a few specific destinations that are popular already.

Research from Skyscanner has revealed the top holiday spots for Brits planning their holidays next year, and the top 10 is a real mixed bag.

From four locations in the US to one right here on British shores, there are plenty of standouts.

Check out their 10 most searched-for travel destinations here.

1. Orlando

In at number one is Orlando, where families can enjoy Disney World and Universal theme parks and resorts.

In Florida, you can also head just slightly out to explore the gator-filled Everglades, or visit the Kennedy Space Center.

After over a year with few attractions open, it’s understandable this is a coveted break.

2. Manchester

It’s quite a surprising second-place entry given the rest of these destinations, but Skyscanner believe it may be an anomaly given many international flights change here.

If not, though, it’s still a wonderful UK city break. Explore the Northern Quarter, see where Oasis, the Smiths, or The Stone Roses were formed, or head to Chinatown for some delicious food.

3. Bangkok

With news that Thailand may be set to scrap quarantine rules for foreign travellers who have had both vaccinations, it’s no surprise Bangkok made the list.

Visit the Grand Palace and the Wat Pho Temple, or head to the coastline to enjoy an authentic full moon party on the beach by night.

4. New York

The city that never sleeps, New York is number four on the destinations we’re keen to head to once the world reopens.

Whether it’s SATC-style shopping, walking the Highline, trying NYC bagels and pizza, or visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, there’s plenty to keep you occupied.

5. Sydney

Australia’s borders are currently closed to visitors, but it’s thought that they should reopen some time in mid 2022.

Sydney has been a popular choice with those planning, due to the warm climate, unspoilt beaches that are perfect for surfing, and landmarks like the Opera House.

6. Tenerife

With temperatures staying warm year-round, this Canary Island is understandably in the top 10 flight searches.

Given it’s not as expensive to travel to Tenerife from the UK (compared to most of the other destinations on this list), it’s a perfect destination for sun and sea that won’t break the bank.

7. Geneva

Perhaps it’s our newfound appreciation for nature that led this Swiss city to be included, as you can see the stunning Mont Blanc while you explore Geneva’s streets.

Stunning museums – like Musée Ariana and Musée d’Art et d’Histoire – mean it’s ideal if you’re interested in soaking up some culture.

8. Miami

Lovers of all things art deco (or kitsch, let’s be real) will adore the buildings of Miami’s Ocean Drive and Bayside.

The local cuisine, nicknamed Floribbean due to its roots in countries across the Caribbean, is famed among foodies. Plus, there are coral reefs that snorkelling fans will adore.

9. Tokyo

Continuing on the theme of ‘bucket list’ type trips on this list is Tokyo at ninth.

Shrines like Meiji Jingu offer complete tranquility away from the city – if that’s what you’re after – or you can try Japanese delicacies like okonomiyaki in Harajuku, go-kart dressed as a Nintendo character around the streets, or walk through the famous Shibuya crossing.

10. Las Vegas

If it’s a flutter you fancy, there’s no better place than Vegas, which is world renowned for its expansive casinos.

It’s really all about opulence here, from the Bellagio to the MGM Grand, and cabaret shows are a must. Pool parties are ubiquitous at all these venues, with top DJs and performers at many.
