The best Greek beaches for a half term escape as travel restrictions ease – with packages from £100pp

THE Greek islands have a bounty of beautiful beaches – including one so stunning it was even chosen for the original Bounty chocolate bar advert.

For Brits wanting a last-minute beach break this half term, there are some gorgeous stretches of sand to inspire you on the shores of Crete, Rhodes and Zante.

Crete

If you’ve been watching Gordon, Gino and Fred Go Greek on TV this week you’ll already have spotted one of the best beaches – Balos Beach in Crete – which you could visit on a bargain break.

Indented into the north-west coast of Crete, the pearlescent sand and aquamarine water of Balos Beach are a sight for sore eyes after a long year of lockdowns.

There are plenty of cheap places to stay in the island's Chania region that are a short trip to the bay.

Holidaymakers can snap up 7-night stays in the Chania region near Balos Beach from £312pp in October travelling with TUI.

As Greece’s largest island, Crete harbours two of the country’s best beaches.

The second, Elafonissi Beach, is on the west coast and easily visited from hotels in Chania.

The dazzling white and sometimes pink-tinged sand extends out into a horse-shoe shape surrounded by crystal-clear water, and location scouts were so impressed they chose it for a Bounty bar advert.

Thomas Cook currently has holidays to the region from just £140pp this October – so you could bag yourself a holiday in paradise for a rock-bottom price.

Zante

But perhaps the most photographed beach in Greece is Smuggler’s Cove in Zante.

Also known as Shipwreck Cove and sometimes referred to as Navagio Beach, Smuggler's Cove is a dramatic bay of golden sand framed by towering limestone cliffs more than 200 metres high.

A rusting shipwreck half-way up the beach completes the photogenic scene.

Though Smuggler's Cove is only accessible by boat, there are plenty of daily excursions to the beauty spot running from Porto Vromi and other harbours around Zante, so it’s relatively easy to reach.

Thomas Cook has all-inclusive packages to Zante this October from £271pp and last-minute trips from an astonishingly low £100pp staying on a room-only basis.

Rhodes

Last but not least, beach seekers can find their own piece of paradise on the pretty island of Rhodes this October with a stay at St Paul’s Bay.

Not far from the Turkish Coast, Rhodes stays hot well into autumn, so the delights of St Paul’s Bay can be enjoyed on a late escape.

With a fine curve of sand in an encircled emerald bay with a small entrance to the open water, and overlooked by an ancient citadel, the beach is truly picturesque and perfect for swimming.

TUI has 7-night packages to Pefkos, close to St Paul’s Bay in Rhodes this October from £294pp.

Don't fancy Greece? Brit holiday favourite Cyprus is also home to some amazing sun-baked beaches, with Nissi Beach being the most eye-catching.

TUI has 7-night stays near Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa from £365pp this autumn.
