The creepy woods you can visit in the UK which inspired Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter

A FOREST in the UK was thought to be the inspiration for both J R R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, as well as JK Rowling for Harry Potter.

Puzzlewood, is found in the Forest of Dean, is known as an ancient woodland which means it has remained a forest since at least the 1600s.

Covering 15 acres, the creepy woods are though to have inspired Tolkien's Middle Earth.

Inside the forest are lots of secret caves and rock formations to explore as the area is a giant maze with intricate pathways, some of which were laid down in the 19th century.

It is thought to date back to the Roman period and was used for cast iron ore mining.

While most of the Lord of the Rings movies were actually filmed in New Zealand, the scary woods were also thought to have inspired J K Rowling.

The author was believed to have visited when writing the Harry Potter novels, and were the basis for the Forbidden Forest.

The location was then used in the final Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie.

It isn't the only blockbuster to be filmed there – 2015 Star Wars film The Force Awakens, along with the Snow White sequel The Huntsman: Winter's War also shot some of their scenes there, along with the 2020 adaptation of The Secret Garden.

TV shows including Doctor Who, Merlin and Atlantic also shot a number of episodes there.

To visit Puzzlewood, it costs £7 for adults and £6 for kids although visitors aged two or under go free.

You can even stay there with a number of self-catered cottages on-site, as well as a cafe serving sandwiches, snacks and kids lunchboxes.

Sadly the current play area is closed due to Covid, but download the app and kids can get involved in a treasure hunt for 20 objects, items, faces and places, including the new Big Four animals.

Here are some other things you can do in the Forest of Dean.

A travel photographer has travelled the UK to find the exact locations where a number of iconic films and TV shows have been shot.
