The London airport that's thousands of miles from the city – and doesn't actually have any UK flights | The Sun

DESPITE being called London Airport, passengers may be surprised to realise it is actually thousands of miles from the capital city in England.

Not only that, but it doesn't have any direct UK flights.

London International Airport is found in the city of London, Ontario in Canada.

In 1927, the city of London built the airport, and named it London Airport in 1929.

During World War II, it was used as a military training base, before it underwent a massive renovation.

From 1974 to 1998, a $12million (£10.1million) expansion updated the terminals and runways.

The extension of the runway to 8800 feet allowed the airport to operate more international flights.

It is now the 20th busiest airport in Canada, with around 515,000 passengers a year.

Airlines that operate from the airport include Swoop, WestJet and Air Canada, with international destinations such as Cancun in Mexico, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Varadero in Cuba.

Other flights include domestic ones around Canada and one to Orlando in the US.

Despite being called London International Airport, it is a whopping 3650 miles from London in England.

And there are no direct flights to the UK either.

If you wanted to travel from London International Airport in Canada to London Heathrow in the UK, it would take around 20 hours with two stops in both New Jersey and Toronto.

In England, there is also an airport that is closer to France than London.

Lydd Airport, also known as London Ashford Airport, was once the busiest airport in the country.

And a number of airports in the UK could soon reopen to passengers.

Plymouth Airport could soon relaunch flights after more than a decade, while Manston Airport in Kent could also reopen after closing in 2014.
