The magic packing ratio for holidays – and the maximum number of shoes to take on a break

A TRAVEL packing expert has revealed the ideal ratio to maximise precious luggage space.

The equation allows holidaymakers to make the most of their limited wardrobe while on a break.

Anne McAlpin, author of Pack It Up: The Essential Guide to Smart Travel, swears by the 3:1 packing ratio.

She explained: "A ratio, when it comes to packing, is the number of tops you pack per every bottom; I pack three tops to every bottom…

"This ratio will vary from person to person, and even from trip to trip, depending on your personal style, reason for travelling, and your access to laundry…

"Packing three tops to every bottom allows me to pack a wide variety of outfits using only a few versatile pieces, by planning a wardrobe around a central, neutral colour everything can mix and match. Multi-use items can extend a travel wardrobe even further."
