The methods you can use to fall asleep on planes – even in uncomfortable economy seats | The Sun

SLEEPING during a flight is the best way to pass the time, but nodding off on a busy plane is a skill few people possess.

Plane seats are uncomfortable, there's often no leg room and the noise and lighting on board can keep us awake.

But one sleep expert has revealed his foolproof methods for nodding off on a plane – even in an uncomfortable economy seat.

Sleep expert and CEO of sleep tracker app Rise Science, told Conde Nast Traveller: "The best bet to feel your best while travelling and at your new destination is to go into your trip with low sleep debt.

"The less sleep deprived you are, the better chance you have of weathering insufficient sleep on the plane, as well as quickly adapting to your new time zone."

When boarding the plane, he also recommended adjusting your schedule to the time at your arrival destination.

He added: "Set your watch to the time in your destination’s time zone when boarding the plane, and try to sleep (or not), eat, and get sunlight accordingly."

If you're trying to get some kip on a flight, you'll need to be prepared too.

Jeff suggested packing travel accessories like an eye mask, ear plugs, noise-canceling headphones, lavender oil, and a travel pillow onboard.

These added extras mean holidaymakers who are travelling in the economy cabin will feel more like business class passengers too.

If you do want to make sure you get a good night's sleep on a plane, Jeff advised holidaymakers to avoid caffeine and alcohol.

Instead, he suggested sipping on things like herbal tea or water to help stay hydrated.

Meanwhile, Martin Seeley, the CEO and sleep expert at MattressNextDay recommended booking a seat in the same row as the wing.

Not only is this likely to be the quietest area but as the wing is usually where the emergency exit is based, you could also have more legroom.

To sure up your chances of falling asleep on a plane, Martin also suggested taking a long walk around the airport before boarding and downloading a white noise app.

This travel expert revealed how they avoid jet lag on every single flight.

There is a clever plane seat hack that could also improve your sleep on planes.
