The simple utensil that you should never pack in your hand luggage – as it could get you stopped at airport security | The Sun

AIRPORT security staff have revealed a utensil that people shouldn't try and take on board planes.

Lots of passengers take handy products with them on holiday now, that could be convenient for their travels.

However, things like corkscrews and cigarette lighters will always get people held up in the airport, with neither permitted in carry-on bags.

Another item that people might not think will be taken off them by security staff is a straw, in particular a "vampire straw".

These are long reusable metal straws, typically used for smoothies and milkshakes.

However, according to Szaboinc.com, as well as being "the most comfortable straw to use to effortlessly drink any thick shake or smoothie" it also "designed for self defence".

The website states: "The Vampire straw is super tough and long enough to be used like a dagger; its chiseled tip is sharp enough to puncture most synthetic materials."

For that reason, the straws are not allowed to be carried in hand luggage.

A passenger found that out the hard way in Boston airport in Massachusetts.

According to USA today, Arman Achuthan Nair was detained Sunday evening and charged with carrying a dangerous weapon.

A trooper was alerted after the 10-inch-long titanium straw with a beveled end was found in Nair's backpack.

To let other passengers know the risks of bringing one of the straws on board a plane, the New England Transport Security Administration (TSA) tweeted: "This is a Vampire straw. These items are not allowed in passenger carry-on bags.

"A passenger found that out yesterday at Boston Logan Airport when Massachusetts State Police confiscated the item and eventually arrested the 26-year-old man on a state charge."

The straws are far from the most trivial item passengers have confiscated from them at airports.

That title belongs to an opinion-splitting sandwich spread, that people often try and take home as a souvenir from the UK.

According to London City airport’s COO Alison Fitzgerald, passengers are frequently asked to chuck away jars of Marmite at the security gate.

The consistency of the spread means that it is considered a liquid and therefore breaks the 100ml rule that is still in place at most UK airports.

Snow globes are also near the top of the confiscated list at London City Airport.

Alison told Sun Online Travel: “It’s because, unlike most toiletries, snow globes rarely have a clear label that indicates how much liquid is inside."
