Theme parks reopen today – this is how your visit will be different

THEME parks are able to reopen from today after being forced to stay closed due to the lockdown, with eager visitors heading back already.

Huge queues have been spotted at Thorpe Park, although although some restrictions are still in place until next month.

However, excited guests have been able to go on the outdoor rollercoasters and rides, with queues for the popular Nemesis and Samurai attractions.

Theme parks including Thorpe Park will be implementing Covid measures such as on social distancing, temperature checks and mandatory prebooking to control visitor capacity.

Alton Towers has confirmed that some of their indoor attractions will remain closed until May 17, although the theme park and some of the accommodation options are open from today.

Food and drink outlets will also be offering take away or outdoor seating, while all guests over 11 years old will have to wear masks on all of the rides, excluding water rides.

Mandatory masks for kids over the age of 11 are also in place for Legoland and Drayton Manor.

An Alton Towers spokesperson told Sun Online Travel what some of the measures guests can expect: "Additional hygiene and safety measures including enhanced and rigorous cleaning regimes on rides which were successfully introduced and used last year will continue.

"On arrival, guests will be asked to participate in a temperature check using (using a non-touch thermometer).

"In addition, guests will be loaded in household groups/bubbles and socially distanced where applicable to help maintain the highest of hygiene standards."

They added: "We are asking all guests to book their theme park tickets in advance and online to guarantee entry and help us manage guest numbers.

"We’re restricting the number of guests who can visit the theme park each day, to ensure we can maintain social distancing in all areas of the Resort.

"By doing this, we can make sure our guests can enjoy the same number of rides and attractions as they would normally expect to."

There are a number of new rides and lands opening at theme parks in the UK this year.

Chessington World of Adventures has opened their new Croc Drop ride, the first all-new ride to be built at the Surrey resort since 2013.

Paultons Park has also opened their new £12million Tornado Springs with eight new rides and experiences including Storm Chaser, the UK’s first free-spinning rollercoaster.

On May 17, Alton Towers will open The World of David Walliams, the Staffordshire park’s new land with a Gangsta Granny ride, among others.
