Travel expert reveals the magic hour to grab an empty sun lounger at a busy hotel – and you'll still get your lie in | The Sun

A TRAVEL expert has revealed the magic moment when holidaymakers can make their move and get a sun lounger, while also having a lie in.

Every summer, people are seen getting up as early as possible to battle others to claim their spot by the pool.

Already this summer, people have been seen sprinting, queuing up and hoarding sunbeds in popular holiday resorts.

However, they don't need to do it, according to travel journalist Jacob Passy, who instead urges people to wait for a "moment of transition" when people start to leave.

He recommends holidaymakers have a lie in instead of getting up early to get their towel down and then waiting for them to leave for lunch.

He wrote in the Wall Street Journal: "If you can’t be among the first to the pool, look for moments of transition, like just before lunch or dinner, to grab a lounge chair."

Jacob's advice came from a recent cruise he went on, where sunbed hogging is apparently as popular as it is at resorts.

However, he used the mornings to enjoy activities, or get in shape before he sunbathed, something people could easily do at all-inclusive resorts.

He added: "Busy yourself with other activities, like playing the daily bingo games or hitting the gym, when the crowds are sunbathing."

There are some rules that need to be observed by anyone trying to reserve sun loungers.

Fears for summer holidays as Brits warned of more Gatwick Airport strikes

Etiquette expert Katarina, who shares her expert opinions about manners on TikTok at @katarina.etiquette, says people need to be less selfish and more considerate of other hotel guests.

In a video, she said: "If you're staying at a hotel, avoid blocking the sunbeds if you're not planning on staying. It's disrespectful toward other guests.

"Unless the hotel has a reservation system in place, only occupy the sunbeds when you're staying by the pool."

Katarina isn't the only person to weigh in on the issue, renowned etiquette expert, with William Hanson, believes there is a 30-minute grace period on poolside reservations.

This is where hotel guests can use a towel or a book to reserve a spot for no longer than half an hour.

William told the Sun Online Travel: "In the morning, at the start of the day, and you're by the pool after breakfast, then it's fine at 8.30 to put your towel on the bed to reserve your spot.

"But later on in the day after you've used the lounger, and go off for a massage, for example, which is going to be an hour, then you can't use a towel to reserve the sun lounger."

Meanwhile, Staff at a hotel in Tenerife were caught removing towels after cheeky tourists had dumped them and left.

And a mum was left fuming on her holiday in France by "ignorant and selfish" Brits who were reserving sun loungers at the campsite she was staying.
