BRITS have finally been given the go-ahead to travel to Turkey this year, so if you’ve been waiting patiently for a late escape, now’s the time to book.

The country’s coastline has become a firm holiday favourite among Brits for its sun-baked beaches and affordable hotels, and package tour operators have lots of late deals ready to whisk you away this autumn.

Turkey has been taken off the UK's red list, meaning Brits will be able to travel to the country from September 22 at 4am.

It will become part of the new 'rest of the world' category – essentially the green and amber list combined, so fully vaccinated vaccinated holidaymakers and children returning to England from Turkey won't need to isolate.

On their return to the UK, the pre-arrival test will be scrapped for travellers who have had both jabs, while the day two test won't have to be a PCR test, but a cheaper lateral flow test, costing around £30.

Turkey’s coast boasts some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean – from wide sweeping sandy bays backed by pine-clad mountains to sparkling coves hidden by towering cliffs.

The most beautiful beaches are on the Turquoise Coast, which stretches from Marmaris in the west to Antalya in the east.

The dazzling spit of sand and shingle that curves around the emerald lagoon at Oludeniz is perhaps the most stunning beach in Turkey, and easily the most photographed.

The Blue Flag beach at Oludeniz is regularly cited as among the best in Europe and is a paradise for beach lovers.

Situated in the middle of the Turquoise Coast the lagoon area is protected from development so the chatter of birds and insects can be heard while you laze by the crystal clear waters.

Though the mouth of the lagoon can become busy in the summer, there are several other beaches around its shores where the shallow calm water is perfect for children.

The outer beach is so wide and long that there’s more than enough space, even in high season, for all the tourists that flock here.

Shops and restaurants cluster along the main beach promenade where you can grab a bite to eat or a sunset drink.

Holidays to Marmaris are always popular too.

Sitting beside the giant bay of Marmaris with its endless miles of golden sand, the resort is set on Turkey’s stunning Turquoise Coast, with the foothills of the soaring Taurus mountain range as a backdrop.

The pretty harbour-side and promenade are a great place for an evening meal and stroll and the old town features neat white-washed houses climbing up towards a little fortress.

Close to the giant bay of Marmaris with its endless miles of golden sand, quiet and inexpensive Icmeler is another Turkish beach holiday hotspot.

To soak up the sun in an idyllic setting on Turkey’s Mediterranean Coast head to the twin sweeping bays of Alanya, known as Eastern beach and Cleopatra beach.

These vast sandy swathes are separated by a 250-metre-high promontory capped by a medieval citadel and rest beside a thriving seaside town.

There are loads of shops and eateries here, and Alanya has plenty of beachside hotels to choose from.

The charming harbour village of Kalkan is also popular as a beach holiday base, and isn’t far from the protected dune-backed sands of Patara – a favourite nesting beach for loggerhead turtles.

Perfect for holidaymakers who want to stay in an upmarket beach resort, Belek has a sandy shore that stretches for miles along the Mediterranean coast and is lined with five-star resorts and spa hotels.

It’s great for a peaceful beach break and is the ideal place to experience the famous Turkish baths – known locally as hammams.

If you are looking for a lively holiday but want to taste the real Turkey, consider staying in the old town of Bodrum on Turkey’s south Aegean shores.

Sitting on a rocky peninsula scattered with beaches, Bodrum is a bustling resort with a thriving nightlife that still manages to retain some traditional charm.

Nearby, the long curve of sand at Gumbet is a good option for water sports, with everything from wake-boarding and windsurfing to parasailing and banana-boat rides available on the beach.

It’s also an inexpensive place to stay with plenty of great package deals available.
