Turkey hols could be back soon, says travel expert – as 90% of hospitality vaccinated and Covid cases drop

TURKEY holidays could soon be back on thanks to falling Covid cases and a rise in vaccinations, according to one travel expert.

The country is currently on the UK's red list, meaning travel is banned to Turkey and Brits returning have to pay £1,750 to quarantine at a government-mandated hotel.

However, PC Agency's Paul Charles said the country could soon be back on the cards for a holiday as the situation improves in the country.

He said on his Travel Radio show: "I know they are meeting the Joint Biosecurity Centre weekly at the moment to go through the data.

"I think they’ve cleaned up the data. I think they’ve vaccinated something like 80 to 90 per cent of their tourism employees and workers in hotels and attractions.

"I understand that they also are starting to see infections come down dramatically because they’ve closed borders to India and Pakistan and areas of red concern."

He added that the destination was an "alternative to the chaos of Europe at the moment," following fears that 5m Brits could be locked out of the EU due to the Indian AstraZeneca vaccine not being accepted.

Portugal and Malta have also enforced new rules on UK arrivals, only accepting fully vaccinated Brits, while Spain now requires negative tests or proof of both jabs.

Turkey was added to the red list earlier this year after it went into it's first lockdown, reporting as many as 63,000 daily cases.

However, this has dropped to just over 5,000 Covid cases per day – much lower than the UK's.

Despite this, the country is unlikely to be moved from the red list to the green list, but could qualify for the amber list.

Brits who have been fully vaccinated could soon return from amber list destinations without having to quarantine back in the UK, under new government plans.

Boris Johnson confirmed in yesterday's announcement that the new measures, due to be announced later this week, will allow families to return from destinations such as Spain, Greece and Portugal without having to self-isolate for 10 days.

He said: “Recognising the protection afforded by two doses of vaccine, we will work with the travel industry towards removing the need for fully vaccinated arrivals to isolate on return from an amber country.

"And the Transport Secretary will provide a further update later this week.”

Germany has now lifted Covid travel restrictions for double-jabbed Brits, giving a boost to holidaymakers.

However, holidays to green list Balearic Islands are at risk as Covid cases jump in recent days, following a Covid outbreak in students.

Jet2's Steve Heapy told Sun Online Travel last week that until more destinations are added to the green list, or double-jabbed Brits can return from amber list countries without quarantining, holidays will fail to be back as usual.
