Revealed: Virgin to open a hotel in Glasgow in 2022 overlooking the River Clyde, with the city an ‘extra special’ location for Richard Branson as his wife is ‘a proud Glaswegian’

Virgin Hotels has announced plans to open a brand new hotel in Glasgow in the heart of the city’s shopping area, ‘making it an ideal base to explore the city’.

The brand, by Sir Richard Branson, said the property would be located at 236-246 Clyde Street, overlooking the River Clyde.

Virgin Hotels Glasgow is expected to open in 2022 and will be the brand’s second Scottish hotel to be signed. Virgin Hotels Edinburgh is also planned for 2022.

The hotel will showcase panoramic river views and feature 242 ‘Chambers’ (bedrooms) and ‘Grand Chamber Suites’.

Guests will also have at their disposal a meeting and event space and multiple dining and drinking outlets, including the brand’s signature culinary experience, Commons Club, which is ‘a restaurant, bar and modern social club’, and a communal workspace called the Funny Library Coffee Shop, which will house ‘an assortment of whimsical and funny books and games’. Funny Library Coffee Shop will pour coffee by Laughing Man, the brand co-founded by actor Hugh Jackman.

The hotel will also operate Virgin’s ‘No Nickel and Diming’ policy, which includes ‘street-priced’ minibars, free Wi-Fi, and ‘zero amenity fees’.

Virgin Hotels Glasgow will be completed in partnership with owner and developer Silk Property Group alongside Siggis Capital as the asset manager, architects 21st Architecture and RM Funds as a financial partner.

Virgin Hotel’s accommodation roster includes Virgin Hotels Chicago, Virgin Hotels Dallas, Virgin Hotels Nashville and recently opened Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

The brand has announced additional openings this year – Virgin Hotels New Orleans this summer and Virgin Hotels New York City this autumn. Virgin Hotels Miami is planned for 2022 and beyond.
