Nine nuns at an upstate New York convent have died of causes related to COVID-19 in just over a month.

The nuns lived at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in Latham, according to the Albany Times Union.

“Four of the deaths associated with the congregation had been previously reported earlier this month by the hospitals,” Albany County Health Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen said in the statement to the newspaper. “The other five were not reported to the Albany County Department of Health by the facility.”

The convent is home to approximately 140 nuns, according to its website.

On Dec. 11, Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet said 22 of the sisters had tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a memo obtained by NBC affiliate WNYT.

In December, eight nuns at a Wisconsin convent died of COVID-19 complications in the same week; four of them passing away on the same day.
