BBC1's Christmas Day schedule near-identical to 2021 and 2020 line-ups

Deja VIEW! BBC1’s 2022 Christmas Day schedule is near identical to their 2021 and 2020 line-up… with Mrs Brown’s Boys, Strictly Come Dancing, Call the Midwife and Vicar of Dibley repeat all set to air for the THIRD year in a row

  • The schedule for BBC1 on Christmas Day is almost identical to the last two years
  • Familiar shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Mrs Brown’s Boys are back
  • The only change is the departure of Blankety Blank which is replaced by Ghosts
  • Some social media users have branded the schedule a ‘disgrace’ and ‘rubbish’

Viewers tuning into BBC1 on Christmas Day could be forgiven for thinking they’ve seen it all before as it airs a near-identical schedule to last year.

The BBC’s most popular channel is often the go-to for families looking for some entertainment as the day wears on.

And those who do turn on the TV will see chiefs at the organisation have decided not to rock the boat with this year’s programming.

The Beeb has decided to keep to the old favourites such as Mrs Brown’s Boys, Strictly Come Dancing, Call the Midwife and Vicar of Dibley for the third year in a row.

Meanwhile, over on BBC2 there will be only one programme on offer that hasn’t already been aired, with the rest of the schedule being made up of repeats of the likes of Dad’s Army, The Morecombe and Wise Show and Wallace and Gromit.

An analysis recently found nearly 29 per cent of BBC1’s festive schedule, from December 24 to January 6, will be made up of repeats, rising to nearly 65 per cent for BBC2 – and averaging out at 45.8 per cent.

The BBC’s flagship channel will air the same shows on Christmas Day – with Ghosts replacing Blankety Blank in the only change

Christmas Night begins on BBC One with Strictly Come Dancing at 5.10pm, the same time as last year.

It is then followed by another festive episode of Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel at 6.25pm.

In 2020 and 2021 the family show was followed by Blankety Blank, but this year it has been replaced with an episode of comedy Ghosts, which is set to air at 7.25pm.

The annual Call The Midwife Christmas Special will go out at 7.55pm, followed by EastEnders at 9.25pm.

This will be followed by Mrs Brown’s Boys at 10.25pm, meaning all six shows apart from Ghosts will run in the same order as last year and the year before.

In a slight change up to the schedule this year will see BBC News and On Christmas Night shown before the traditional Vicar of Dibley repeat at 11.20pm.

In the morning BBC1 will show repeats of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, Superworm, Abominable and Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon.

Later in the day King Charles III will deliver his first Christmas message to the Commonwealth as monarch at 3pm.

Brendan O’Carroll, pictured, will star once again in a seasonal edition of Mrs Brown’s Boys

Michael McIntyre will also front a Christmas Day version of The Wheel

On BBC2  the morning will see three repeats of Wallace and Gromit’s A Close Shave, The Wrong Trousers and A Matter of Loaf and Death, before the channel suspends programming at 11.35am.

The afternoon will see re-runs of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot, followed by Dad’s Army, The Morecombe and Wise Show and Tina Turner at the BBC.

The only original programming on the channel that day will be the King’s Christmas speech and When Tina Tuner Came to Britain showing her relationship with the UK.

By comparison ITV1 will show episodes of Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win and the Doc Martin Christmas Special.

Channel 4 will show The Snowman, The Great Escape, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Great Pottery Throw Down and Gogglebox.

People on social media have branded the BBC’s Christmas schedule ‘insulting rubbish’

Social media users have branded the BBC’s Christmas schedule ‘insulting rubbish’.

One user wrote: ‘The @BBC are disgraceful to put the same line up of insulting rubbish on TV yet again this Christmas: time to tune into other channels and spend time with family/friends instead’.

One sarcastically said: ‘I do hope the #BBC will show repeats of Mrs Brown’s Boys this Christmas’.

Another said: ‘@bbc What an absolute disgrace to present a Christmas programme of old repeats and mind numbing rubbish. You should be ashamed as the national broadcaster’.

Someone else wrote: ‘Glad I do not have a TV Licence if all the BBC want to show is repeats. They normally have a Disney movie at 3.10pm on Christmas Day as well, which this year I suspect may be Frozen 2 but I could be wrong (and hope I’m wrong)’.

A BBC spokesman said: ‘BBC One took the top seven spots on Christmas Day last year so we know viewers love to watch new episodes of their favourite shows, and this year we are adding Ghosts, Aladdin and The Smeds and The Smoos to our fabulous line-up.

‘The BBC invests more in British content at Christmas than any other broadcaster or service and this year over 95 per cent of our peak time schedule is brand new.’
