Chris Evans backs The Sun's Jabs Army campaign as 35,000 sign up to volunteer in Covid vaccination centres

CHRIS Evans has backed The Sun’s Jabs Army campaign as 35,000 have signed up to volunteer at Covid vaccination centres.

The Virgin Radio breakfast show host spoke to Sun editor Victoria Newton this morning, as she revealed how she hopes the campaign will reach 50,000 volunteers by the end of the week.

Chris told listeners on his Virgin Radio show how he had seen the campaign in action at Chelsea Barracks: "I pass Chelsea Barracks every day and I’ve been seeing this.

"When you witness it going on –  the vaccination process through the gates –  it's so calm because the cars are spaced out and the people are spaced out.

"It's a very urgent thing that's going on but with a sort of relaxed reassured air. It's just what we need to see now.

"I can tell you now the amount of people that listen to the show online is way beyond the number of people needed to sign up to the Jabs Army campaign.

"If half of the people who are just online listening now signed up to the jabs army, you'd easily pass 50,000.

"So what are we waiting for people, for heaven's sake. We need you.”

How to sign up:

VOLUNTEERS for the Jabs Army are being asked to first register online at nhsvolunteerresponders.org.uk.

You will then receive an email with login details to sign up online.

Finally, you will be asked to download the GoodSAM app on a smartphone which will match you to a role in your area.

Services will be opening in the coming days and weeks, with different areas up and running at different times, so you might not be required on site for some weeks. Not everyone who signs up will need to be called upon.

You need to commit to only two six-hour shifts a month at a vaccination service, and no prior experience or qualifications are required.

You will work as part of a team that will include NHS staff and volunteers. The Royal Voluntary Service will conduct appropriate background checks.

So far the campaign has already hit 35,000 sign-ups since its launch on New Years Day.

As it stands, Britain is Europe's leading light in the effort to vaccinate against coronavirus.

Latest figures reveal the UK has given 10 times more jabs than many of its European neighbours after the government kick started Covid vaccinations last month.

More than 2.6 million people – almost four per cent of the UK population – had received a jab as of yesterday.

The aim is to ultimately get 15million jabs into arms by March – which is a huge logistical mission.

That's why Britain's biggest businesses including BT, Morrisons, British Airways, PaddyPower, Sky TV and others have all backed our campaign.

The firms called on their collective 500,000 workers to sign up as volunteers to help the NHS achieve its historic victory over the pandemic.

Celebrities like Bear Grylls, Gordon Ramsay and Bake Off's Matt Lucas have also thrown their support behind the campaign.

You can join the effort to rollout the vaccines too, and you only need to commit to two six-hour shifts a month at a vaccine service.

Just sign up via the NHS volunteer responders’ app – full details of how to join are below.

The Sun says

GIVING priority in the queue for the vaccine to volunteers who help deliver millions of jabs is a masterstroke.

There have been a great many mis-steps in the Government’s handling of the pandemic but there are signs immunisation will not be another.

Matt Hancock says we are on course to vaccinate all over 18s by the Autumn.

With the Queen and Prince Philip now leading by example, vaccination superhubs will open offering four jabs a minute.

We are now jabbing more people than any country on the Continent.

The beginnings of herd immunity in some areas and the rollout today of quick turnaround workplace testing means we can see the sunny uplands of hope coming in Spring and Summer.

What better way to reward those amazing Sun readers who have joined our Jabs Army than to give them the protection their noble sacrifice deserves?

A huge NHS operation has seen seven mass vaccination hubs open across the country this week, supported by hundreds more GP surgeries, hospital hubs and pharmacy-led sites.

However, vaccination drives across the continent have got off to a sluggish start, with country such as France and the Netherlands delivering less than a tenth of the number of jabs.

Compared to the UK's 3.94 per cent, both are currently on just 0.21 per cent.

Meanwhile, Belgium has vaccinated only 0.07 per cent of its population so far.

The UK was the first to approve the Pfizer vaccine last month and Margaret Keenan, 91, from Coventry became the first person in the world to receive the jab on December 8.

Britain has ordered a total of 350m vaccinations from seven different firms – including 100m of the Oxford/Astrazeneca jab which was approved for use by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on December 30.

This comes as the daily Covid deaths today jumped by more than 1,000 again as cases rose by a further 45,533.

The total number of people who have died from the disease now stands at 83,203 as a mutant strain continues to rampage across the country.

The total number of infections is now 3,164,051 after 45,533 more tested positive.

This is lower than yesterday when 46,169 more cases were reported but today's death toll of 1,243 is higher than the 529 recorded.
