Sen. Ted Cruz ripped the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wednesday, saying the agency had “destroyed their credibility” with their “absurd” recommendation that vaccinated people wear masks indoors in areas of “substantial” or “high” coronavirus transmission.

“That’s not science. That’s politics. It’s pure politics,” the Texas Republican told Fox News’ “Hannity”.

“You know what? Yesterday, vaccines worked. Today, they still work, but as a political matter, the Democrats decided they want to control your lives, they want everyone to wear a mask, and my view is real simple: We shouldn’t have federal government mandates on COVID.

“That means no mask mandates,” added Cruz, who said that he and his family have been vaccinated. “That means no vaccine mandates. That means no vaccine passports. This should be a question of individual choice.”

The CDC guidance, announced by Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky, classifies areas with at least 50 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days as having had “substantial” or “high” transmission of COVID-19. According to the agency’s data, two-third of US counties meet that definition.

Walensky claimed that unpublished data indicates the level of the Delta variant of the virus in infected vaccinated people is “indistinguishable” from the level of virus in the noses and throats of unvaccinated people. However, critics have suggested the data is from a study of COVID-19 transmission in India with subjects who received vaccinations not approved in the US.

“A year and a half ago, the CDC was one of the most respected scientific organizations in the world, and they allowed themselves to be politicized with Dr. [Anthony] Fauci at the helm of the politicization,” Cruz said. “Right now, their credibility is in tatters because they behaved more like an arm of the DNC then an actual, serious medical and scientific organization.”

The Texas Republican also slammed the Biden administration for its ongoing illegal immigration policies, saying the practice of processing illegal immigrants and releasing them into the US was contributing to the spread of the virus.

“The Democrats are wildly hypocritical,” Cruz said. “They’re more than happy to put all sorts of mandates on American citizens, whether it’s mask mandates, whether it’s shutdowns of your business, whether it’s shutting down your schools and hurting your kids, they’re willing to do all of that. But when it comes to illegal immigrants, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have had a complete open border.”

Recalling his March visit to the Rio Grande Valley, the senator told host Sean Hannity: “I brought 19 senators down to the Valley to see the Biden cages, with little boys and little girls packed in, one on top of each other.

“When we were there, they had a rate of COVID positivity of over 10 percent, and like a churning, revolving door, Joe Biden is releasing them … It’s spreading COVID in our communities and I’ll tell you right now,” Cruz went on, “the election of Joe Biden, Joe Biden becoming president of this country, was a COVID super-spreader event because they’re releasing illegal aliens in South Texas and all across the country with COVID and they’re spreading COVID, and yet … they don’t want to do anything to protect us.”
