Distraught family pay tribute to ‘loving’ daughter, 15, after brother, 19, in court charged with killing her

THE distraught family of a 15-year schoolgirl have paid tribute to their "loving" daughter after her brother appeared in court charged with her murder.

Amanda Selby's heartbroken relatives described her as "caring" and "thoughtful" in a statement released through police.

Her brother, Matthew Selby, 19, was arrested after Amanda was discovered dead at the Ty Mawr Holiday Park at Abergele in North Wales.

The teen appeared at Mold Crown Court today via videolink charged with murder.

Amanda's family said: "Amanda was a loving daughter and grand-daughter – she was caring, thoughtful, liked to help others and very much loved.

"She will be very sadly missed. We ask that our privacy is respected at this difficult time.”

'SADLY MISSED'

A family photograph of Amanda in her school uniform was also shared through North Wales Police.

The grief-stricken family are being supported by specialist officers.

During today's short court hearing, no pleas were entered and Selby spoke only to confirm his name.

A provisional trial date was set for February 28.

Selby, from Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, was remanded in custody to appear at the same court on October 29 for a hearing.

His appearance in court came as Amanda's family paid tribute.

In a statement they said: "Amanda was a loving daughter and grand-daughter.

"She was caring, thoughtful, liked to help others and very much loved. She will be very sadly missed.

“We ask that our privacy is respected at this difficult time.”

HOLIDAY HORROR

North Wales Police were scrambled to the holiday park along with an air ambulance on Saturday afternoon.

They confirmed the bloodbath was being treated as an "isolated incident" and said there was no risk to the public.

Stunned neighbours at the family home in Ashton-under-Lyne revealed the siblings' parents had split up around two years ago.

One said: "It’s shocking news.

"We’ve not seen Matthew or Amanda as much recently because mum and dad had split up.

“Amanda went with mum and Matthew stayed with dad for a while before moving in with his grandparents.

"It's so sad."

'LOVELY STUDENT'

Amanda's school, Droylsden Academy, has now paid tribute to the tragic teen.

A statement said: "Our school is saddened to have received the tragic news that one of our students, Amanda Selby in Year 10, has lost her life whilst on holiday with her family in Wales.

"Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with Amanda’s family at what is an incredibly difficult time.

"Our school family is devastated by this awful news. Amanda was a lovely student and she will be sorely missed by students and staff.

"Clearly, many members of our school community will be affected by this loss and we will be offering support to those who need it in the weeks and months ahead. We will also plan a tribute when the time is right so that we can remember all that Amanda brought to our school."

Ty Mawr describes itself as “a lively park with activities for all ages”.

It is a few miles from Gwrych Castle where the 2020 series of ITV reality show I’m A Celebrity was filmed.

A spokesman for 100-acre Ty Mawr Holiday Park said: “We are shocked and saddened that such a tragic situation happened in such a safe and happy environment, where families come to relax.

“The park welcomes tens of thousands of happy holidaymakers every year.

“This was an isolated and unprecedented incident, which took place inside a caravan that is now a crime scene.”
