Three women were killed and four others injured after a gunman opened fire at a bar in Rome. The suspect, 57, was arrested soon after by police. The bar was located in the Fidene district in the north of the Italian capital.

Residents from a local apartment block were holding a meeting at the time of the incident.

A witness told RAI News that the shooter had been involved in a series of disputes with the residents’ association.

Another person told the Ansa new agency: “He came into the room, closed the door and shouted ’I’ll kill you all’ and then started to shoot.”

The gunman was subsequently overpowered by other residents and disarmed before the police arrived.

At least one of the injured was in a serious condition.

A person at the meeting described the horror attack as it unfolded in vivid detail to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

They said: “He fired at the board of directors of the consortium.

“The man was known by all, he was a member and in the past he had made verbal threats to all of us.

“The weapon jammed at a certain point and was blocked by some consortium members who also unlocked the door.

“I saved myself because I put myself under the table and I managed to crawl out of the room.”

The newspaper claimed the suspect had been denied a firearms license in the past.

The weapon he used was reportedly stolen from a shooting range on Sunday morning.

The shootings have left people in Rome in a state of shock and bewilderment.

The city’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, called an emergency security meeting for Monday in an attempt to reassure citizens.

He described the shooting as “a grave episode of violence that has struck our city”.

One of the deceased was a friend of the recently elected Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

A short time after the incident, the Italian politician posted to her Instagram account what appeared to be a recent photo of herself alongside Nicoleeta Golisano – one of the victims.

Ms Meloni said that her friend had a husband and a 10-year-old child.

She wrote: “It is not right to die like this.

“Nicoletta was happy, and beautiful, in the red dress she bought for her 50th birthday party a few weeks ago.

“For me she will always be beautiful and happy like this.”
