Horror moment terrified children are suspended 100ft in the air after ride malfunctions at carnival

THIS is the horrifying moment petrified kids were stranded more than 100ft in the air after a carnival ride broke down.

Young thrill-seekers had to be rescued using a crane and cherry picker in a dramatic three-hour operation after becoming stuck on a high-speed rotating ride at a fairground in Australia.

Police rushed to the scene at the Chants Summer Carnival in Geelong, near Melbourne, with fire crews after children became trapped on the ride at around 2pm local time.

Shocking video footage shows two helpless kids suspended in the 115ft air with afurther two closer to the ground at the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre after the gearbox of the ride – called Freestyle – malfunctioned.

Emergency teams used a crane and cherry picker to get the kids down, with the final terrified child being rescued shortly after 5pm – three hours after the ride came to a halt.

Organisers took the decision to shut the carnival for the rest of the day, blaming the ride's issue on a faulty gearbox.

In a statement posted to its official Facebook page, Chants Summer Carnival confirmed the gearbox will be replaced before the ride is back open for action.

“Due to today’s incident regarding the gearbox on the 'Freestyle' ride, the Waurn Ponds Carnival will be closed for tonight," it reads.

“The ride is currently being dismantled and taken away to have its gearbox replaced.

"Maintenance and safety of all our machines are our main priority at all times.

"We would like to thank the families involved, emergency services and Worksafe, for their immediate assistance, patience and understanding throughout today.

“It is unfortunate that this has happened, but rest assured all steps will be taken to re-open safely. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back from tomorrow.”

A probe into the cause of the breakdown has been launched by WorkSafe Victoria, the state's health and safety authority.
