Science guru Richard Dawkins has slammed woke university chiefs for failing to expunge students' wild conspiracy theories.

The biology boffin, who has written a string of best-selling books and made 14 documentaries about the origins of life, said academics who failed to counter claims of flat earthers and evolution deniers "need to go back to university".

He said those who allowed the outlandish theories to spread were putting disappointed students' hurt feelings "above scientific truth".

Dawkins, 80, tweeted: "University authorities who think that the 'hurt feelings' of flat earthers and evolution deniers matter more than scientific truth need to go back to university to learn what a university is for.

"Stand up for scientific truth and clarity of language.

"You don’t go to university to feel 'safe' in your 'feelings'. You go to be challenged and to learn how to deal with challenge.''

Several universities – including Cambridge and York – have flat earth societies which discuss a range of conspiracy theories.

Flat earthers believe the world is not round but is in fact flat, despite indisputable evidence to the contrary.

The theory has been around for thousands of life, but it has persisted even after scientific advancements proved that the world is spherical.

There are still organisations trumpeting the theory to this day, including the Flat Earth Society, which was formed in Dover, England, in 1956.

There are also many people who deny that evolution exists.

Dawkins is rarely shy about telling his 2.9 million Twitter followers what he thinks on a range of topics.

He has previously courted controversy for his views on Muslims and Islam.

Dawkins once tweeted: "All the world's Muslims have fewer Noble Prizes than Trinity College, Cambridge. They did great things in the Middle Ages, though."
