The Queen sends message of condolence following the death of former First Lady Barbara Bush, 92

THE Queen has sent a message of condolence following the death of former First Lady Barbara Bush at the age of 92.

The wife of George HW Bush, in the White House from 1989 to 1993, passed away at her home in Texas two days after stopping hospital treatment for lung disease and heart failure.

British Ambassador Sir Kim Darroch said that the UK government was “deeply saddened” by her loss.

Darroch said as one of only two women to be the wife of one US president and the mother of another she was a “very special person in American history”.

George HW Bush, 93, who was holding her hand when she died, called her the most “beloved woman in the world”.

In a statement, he said: “I always knew Barbara was the most beloved woman in the world, and in fact I used to tease her that I had a complex about that fact.

“But the truth is the outpouring of love and friendship being directed at The Enforcer is lifting us all up.

“We have faith she is heaven, and we know life will go on — as she would have it. So cross the Bushes off your worry list.”

Bush’s son, former US President George W Bush, said: “My dear mother has passed on at age 92.

“Laura, Barbara, Jenna, and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was.

“Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions.”

The White House said that current First Lady Melania Trump would attend the funeral.

Melania Trump praised her predecessor for putting her “family and country above all else”.

President Donald Trump said Bush was a woman of strength who will always be remembered for her roles as wife, mother and first lady.
