Ukrainian soldiers ready to 'tear apart Russians with bare hands' says general as country prepares to resist invasion

UKRAINIAN soldiers are reportedly getting ready to "tear apart Russians with their bare hands" as the country is preparing to resist an invasion.

It comes amid mounting fearsRussia could invade in days as Vladimir Putin has massed 100,000 troops on the border with Ukraine.

But Ukraine is determined to repel any possible attack with their forces already being equipped with anti-tank weapons by the UK designed to take kill Russian battle tanks and equip Ukrainian guerrillas who will carry on the fight.

Speaking from a military base in Popasna, Lieutenant-General Oleksandr Pavliuk told the Times: “We have about half a million people who went through a war in this country in which they have either lost someone or something.

"Half a million who have lost the blood of a relative, lost their homes or lost their friends, and they are ready to tear apart Russians with their bare hands.”

He added: “If our intelligence manages to predict the direction of the main Russian hit, after the first big losses they won’t go further.

“Putin realises that after heavy casualties his army may stop by itself. You cannot trust intuition in this. It is about cold calculation.”

The general added that February 20 is a concerning date as it is considered a potential start date for the invasion, with the winter Olympics and the Russian-Belarus exercise at the border coming to an end.

Worrying new evidence suggests that troops are massing within striking distance of Kiev.

Forces are in Belarus less than 20 miles from Ukraine's frontier, after a surge in troop and equipment movements in recent days from Russia's far east.

New videos show invasion drills by paratroopers ahead of hastily arranged joint "exercises" with Putin ally Belarus.

Meanwhile, the US secretary of state Antony Blinken met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Switzerland and accepted an invitation to meet British counterpart, Ben Wallace, amid fears an invasion is "inevitable and imminent."

A senior defence source said: "The defence secretary is glad that Russia has accepted the invitation to talk with his counterpart.

"Given the last defence bilateral between our two countries took place in London in 2013, Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu has offered to meet in Moscow instead.

"The secretary of state has been clear that he will explore all avenues to achieve stability and a resolution to the Ukraine crisis.

"We are in communication with the Russian government."

It comes after Boris Johnson warning it would be a "disaster for the world" if Russia invades Ukraine saying "any kind of incursion, on any scale" would be catastrophic.
