Urgent warning for public to close windows and doors after 'chemical leak' at leisure centre

AN urgent warning has been issued telling locals to shut their windows and doors after there was an "ammonia leak" at a leisure centre.

Officers and crews are working to tackle a "chemical incident" at The Dome Leisure Centre in Doncaster.

It's believed crews are treating it as a suspected ammonia leak after firefighters were called to the scene at 5am this morning.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "Please avoid the area whilst we deal with this incident.

"Do keep windows and doors closed if you live nearby."

A spokesperson for the police said: "Emergency services are dealing with a chemical incident at the Doncaster Dome on Bawtry Road.

"Our officers alongside South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are currently on scene treating what is believed to be an ammonia leak.

"While the risk to the public is low, residents nearby to the Dome are being urged to keep windows and doors closed.

"Firefighters were called to the incident just before 5am this morning (22 May) and are expected to remain in the area for a while and disruption to traffic and buses is to be expected."
