5 Best Running Shorts For Women 2021 | The Sun UK

DON'T worry Brits, it doesn't need to be sweltering (or even just a bit hot) outside for you to benefit from the best running shorts.

The best running shorts equip you with full flexibility, breezy ventilation and prevent any uncomfortable chafing.

When you're going for a run, word on the street is that you should dress for weather about 15 degrees warmer than it actually is.

That means mainly opting for shorts throughout the year, especially because thanks to being so lightweight, they never weigh you down.

The main things to look for in a good pair is that they're comfortable, moisture-wicking and that they stay securely in place at all times.

When shopping online, it's difficult to grasp all of those features which is why we've decided to test out the best running shorts for women. Let's go.

1. CtopoGo Workout Sports Shorts

  1. (AD) CtopoGo Women's Inner Pocket Breezy Mesh 2 in 1 Running Workout Sports Shorts, £17.90 from Amazon – buy here

The 2-in-1 design of CtopoGo at Amazon's Workout Sports Shorts provides full coverage for running, which is always ideal.

Featuring a hot pink and black colour-way, they've got a slim-fit short underneath a baggier design and breathable mesh panels.

For less than £18, we love these! They're great quality with a supportive stretch waistband and more comfy than some expensive styles we own.

Another plus is that there's a secret pocket in the cycling short layer which is amazing for your keys and phone whilst you're out running.

All in all, we'd strongly recommend these as a moisture-wicking, cool pair of shorts that will work wonders for our runners out there.

2. AURIQUE Women's Gym Shorts

  1. (AD) AURIQUE Women's Gym Shorts, £14.20 from Amazon – buy here

We can always rely on Amazon to serve bargains like these AURIQUE gym shorts – they're only £14.20.

If you're a runner then the main thing you're looking for in your gear is comfort and what's really comfier than soft stretch-cotton?

As these shorts are quite mini, you're left with lots of room to move and breathe, so it doesn't actually matter that the fabric's not moisture-wicking.

Made from softer-than-soft fabric, these shorts fit true to size with an adjustable drawstring waist that ensures they don't fall down as you run.

You don't have much coverage which is fine for running but for the gym, you'll probably want to avoid things like squatting or leg presses.

All in all, we're keeping these as our loungewear-come-running go-to when our more moisture-proof pairs are in the wash. Not bad.

3. Lululemon Hotty Hot LR Short 4"

  • Hotty Hot LR Short 4", £29 from Lululemon – buy here

We can rely on Lululemon's active-wear to always look just as cool as it is practical and the Hotty Hot LR Shorts are here to prove it.

Designed for running, they're cut from lightweight, four-way-stretch fabric that's made up of 100 percent recycled polyester.

There's much more to these shorts than you expect from the photo: from the discreet zip pocket to the breathable mesh edges.

Lined with in-built knickers, these shorts are one of the stretchiest waterproof pairs in our workout wardrobe.

Although they're great for running as the fabric is so moisture-wicking, we can see these being worn on beach holidays and sunny dog walks alike.

They're comfy, cool and definitely on our must-have running shorts list.

4. Women's UA Draft Run Shorts

  • Women's UA Draft Run Shorts, now £34.97 from Under Armour – buy here

Under Armour think details when it comes to their sportswear: the UA Draft Run Shorts are fitted with briefs, so you feel covered at all times.

They're cut with anti-odour technology, a four-way stretch and breathable ArmourVent® technology to keep you cool.

After wearing these for a long run, they might just be our favourite pair on the list – we loved the secure feel of the briefs.

Plus, the waistband makes you feel supported and you can hardly feel the shorts when you're running as they're so lightweight.

Oh, and they have reflective details for running late into the evening.

Yes, they're very short but the briefs combined with the soft airy fabric makes them much better than others on the market.

5. MP Women's Essentials Training Energy Shorts

  • MP Women's Essentials Training Energy Shorts – Black, £20 from MyProtein – buy here

Sporting MyProtein's signautre MP waistband, the MP Women's Essentials Training Energy Shorts are an affordable staple at £20.

Cut from quick-drying fabric, they've got a thick elasticated waistband that's got an internal drawstring so that you can adjust them to suit you.

Ok, so, these are definitely the most lightweight shorts we've ever worn.

The fabric's quite thin which is amazing if you're exercising in summer (when the British sun actually makes an appearance).

In terms of the length, when worn high-waisted they're really short which works well for flexibility but not so much if there are gross men around.

We'd even size up if you want them to be slightly longer as you can always just tighten the drawstring waist.

Which women's running shorts are best?

You know running shorts are good when they stay put however hard you work and don't uncomfortably ride up.

There are tons of styles on the high-street which qualify as being the best, but in terms of best-sellers, Lululemon, Nike's Running range and Under Armour all have popular contenders for being durable and sweat-wicking.

Why are women's running shorts so short?

Although men's running shorts have got shorter and shorter over the years, women's shorts in general tend to be shorter to extend the visual length of your leg, which is obviously a sexist ideal.

However, shorts that rise to quite a bit above your knee can actually give you more ventilation on really hot days and feel comfier in general.

You still have the option to shop longer running shorts for women if you prefer, like these:

(left to right)

  1. Reebok Running Shorts, £28 from JD Sports – buy here
  2. Training Essential Tight Shorts, £24.99 from Superdry – buy here
  3. Explorer Shorts, £60 from Sweaty Betty – buy here

What to look for in women's running shorts

When opting for running shorts, you should always prioritise whether they're breathable and if they give you flexibility.

Many designs on the high-street even feature splits on the sides to allow for more freedom of movement.

In terms of fabrics, synthetic materials are your best bet as they're moisture-wicking and stretchy.

Where to buy running shorts

Every sports shop you come across will have its own offering of running shorts and many other high-street stores do too.

There are also a lot of online retailers such as Amazon, eBay and ASOS which offer some branded and non-branded gems for great prices.

Top tip: some running shorts are simply sports designs, so you don't have to buy ones with the word 'running' in the name.
