Aldi shoppers fuming as 84,000 queue for SpecialBuy which sells out in minutes

Aldi was forced to suspend sales after 84,000 shoppers flooded to its website to secure the SpecialBuy of the year – but shoppers were angry when it sold out before it was meant to go on sale.

The retailer finally re-stocked its famous hanging egg chair as part of its popular garden range.

The £149 chair returned to stores as a SpecialBuy after selling out in just one minute last year – and when it's gone it's gone.

Alongside the chair, Aldi also launched a three piece Rattan Effect Bistro Set for £149.99 and a Duel Fuel barbecue.

So, Brits will be set for summer nights in the garden as Covid restrictions ease and friends and family are able to meet up once again.

More than four times last year’s online queue of 19,000 flocked to the Aldi website, reports the Mirror.

At 8.44am, shoppers were told that 23,000 people were ahead of them in the queue – and one customer said 84,000 were ahead of him.

The chair was in such huge demand that Aldi was forced to pause sales before 9am in the morning – after accidentally launching it early.

A message on the Aldi website said: "You're in the queue…

"We're very sorry, but there are currently lots of people trying to access the Aldi website."

It continued: "We've automatically placed you in a queue.

"Don't worry about refreshing – this page will update automatically as soon as you can enter the site."

And customers were raging.

“Really disappointed with Aldi today,” one Twitter user said.

“New special online should launch at 8am, went online at 7:50 to buy the egg chair and they were all sold out.”

Another shopper fumed: “@AldiUK aaaaaargh.

“Come on Aldi, 8am your ads say the egg chair will be available.

“Here we are at 7am and they are all gone. When did you list them and is this how you usually operate?”

A spokesperson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this caused and can confirm that a limited number of Hanging Egg Chairs will be back in stock soon.

“Customers can sign up for an alert on the product’s web page, which will notify them when it is back on sale.”

If you weren’t able to bag a hanging chair – which sold out within minutes – then you may have to turn to other stockists ahead of the warmer seasons.

Only Oak Furniture is selling a grey swing chair for £220, here.

While B&M are stoking a pretty grey version for just £175 – but you’ll have to check if the chair is available at your local store.
