With a career in sports and showbiz, Alex Scott has become one of the most recognisable faces on British TV.

Largely private about the details of her love life, the former England and Arsenal footballer has recently opened up about how she is “ready” to find love following a string of “unhealthy relationships”.

Alex, 38, who was recently labelled a 'legend' for World Cup One Love armband in Qatar, revealed, "I've been single for a while now, and I think that's because I needed to be. There were patterns in my relationships that I knew were not healthy."

She explained: "I understand myself more now.

"Before I always had these walls up because I was trying to protect myself and protect people around me.

"Now I'm ready to let them all down. I'm ready to be loved," she toldThe Times.

However, romance doesn’t appear to be on the cards yet as on The One Show in February 2022, during a conversation about a dating show, Alex admitted: “I know I’m single – don’t!”

Alex was previously linked to Corrie actor Sam Robertson, 37, who plays Ken Barlow’s grandson Adam in the soap. Spotted together in the Soho restaurant, Dead Street Townhouse, onlookers claimed the pair flirted openly.

In her autobiography published earlier this year, Alex also revealed she’d had a secret long-term relationship with a fellow Lioness when she was a young player.

Her “first love”, she revealed, was fellow footballer Kelly Smith, 44. The pair started dating in 2005 and reportedly split in 2013.

Alex explained in her book How (Not) To Be Strong: “For me, it’s like that first love story, I fell madly and deeply in love. And yes, there’s that heartbreak and those things, but it’s a huge part of my life and I wouldn’t go back and change that.”

Speaking at a London book launch for How (Not) To Be Strong, Alex revealed she almost left out the chapter which discusses their “love story”, but felt like it would have been “cheating” to do so in the end.

She said: “I went back and forth on whether I’d actually be writing the chapter. But then it was one of those moments, I’m writing this book and I want to tell everything.”

The couple met when they both played for Arsenal in 2005, before transferring to play together in the US women’s league for the Boston Breakers.

They both returned to the UK in 2012 when the GB women’s team was playing in the London Olympics. Kelly is six years Alex’s senior, and has been married to DeAnna Dobosz since 2016, with whom she shares two children.

Having been linked to both men and women, sources close to Alex have revealed she “doesn’t label herself as anything,” adding: “This isn't her big coming out story but was a chapter in her life that she wanted to include in her book because it had such an impact on her.”

Alex has made 140 appearances for the England national team and represented Great Britain at the Olympics. She retired from playing professional football in 2017, the same year she received an MBE for her services to football.

Swapping the pitch for the pundit lounge, Alex became the first female football pundit at a World Cup for the BBC. She is currently a football pundit for BBC Sport and Sky Sports, among other TV presenting gigs.
