Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Raised $1 Million For Texas Relief

It started with a simple request: "If you're able, please donate here," Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez implored her 12.4 million Twitter followers. Just hours later, the New York congresswoman raised $1 million for Texas relief as residents of the state face loss of heat and electricity amid a massive storm.

On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that her team was putting together relief efforts for Texas, partnering with five organizations getting on-the-ground relief to residents. "If you're able, please donate here — it'll split your contribution to all 5," she tweeted along with a link. "100% goes to them."

According to the fundraiser site, donations will be divided among the Bridge Homeless Recovery Center, Ending Community Homeless Coalition, Family Eldercare, Houston Food Bank, and Feeding Texas.

Two hours later, she updated her followers, writing that the donations had already totaled to $325,0000 to provide food, housing, elder care & direct relief straight to vulnerable Texans.

"This might be a little crazy… but can we raise $1M by midnight?" she asked.

AOC asked — and her followers delivered. Roughly four hours after she first sent a call to action, Team AOC officially raised $1 million for Texas. "I'm at a loss for words. Always in awe of movement work," the congresswoman tweeted.

In her Instagram story on Thursday night, Ocasio-Cortez said that as a gesture of gratitude for the donations, she will be flying to Texas this weekend to increase relief efforts.

Earlier this week, Texas senator Ted Cruz was slammed for flying to Cancun, Mexico for a vacation while those who helped elect him were suffering under dangerous conditions.
